Unlike all other Survivor seasons, this merge is not celebrated by a grand feast. Instead, it takes place at the Immunity Challenge, where only four participate in it.
For the first time in the series, an immunity idol can be obtained by one of the players outside normal competition. They are told by Jeff Probst that an idol is hidden in the area around the camp and, once found, can be used, once only, from that night up until the Final Four competition. It goes unfound for this episode...
Jamie: We just gotta stand here with a pot on our head. You're a pot head!
Rafe: I've kind of had this really sad realization - am I a member of the Axis of Evil?
Stephenie: An Immunity Idol, that's cool and all, but we're like, starving.
Rafe: I'm searching for the Immunity Idol, and I reach up and put my hand in a hornet's nest. That is a signal from the Mayan gods that I am not meant to find this idol.
Judd: I gotta take a leak. Maybe I'll take a leak all over the idol.
Brandon: (About the hidden idol search) This is gonna be like lookin' for a needle in a haystack.
Bobby Jon: It's really tough for me to walk here tonight, because I can't be around Stephenie for more than five minutes, and I can't be around Jamie for more than five minutes, because I'll knock him out.
Rafe: Bashing people when they are not around to bring group unity is not a nice way to play this game.
Brandon: Woke up this morning and it wasn't a dream: we really merged. A new tribe, one big happy family, but that's not how it is at all.
Bobby Jon: (talking to the camera about Jamie) He says something smart, I'm just like, you know dude, you gonna say one more thing to me, I'm gonna make every one of your teeth slam out of your head.
The two tribes merge into one, Xhákúm, in this episode. The players now compete individually and will always wear red buffs.
Upon merging, the survivors receive tree mail announcing that hidden in the jungle is a six inch immunity idol. Whoever finds the idol may use it to save himself from being voted out of the tribe. Whoever finds the idol may choose to keep their find a secret until they decide to use it. The catch - the power expires when it comes down to the final four, and it must be revealed before the vote. No one finds the hidden idol in this episode.
Gary wins the first Immunity challenge of the newly formed tribe, "Pot Head," where the participating players must balance a pot on their head for a maximum of one hour. At the end of the hour, a tie-breaker round ensues, where the five remaining survivors race to the top of the Mayan temple while balancing the pot.
Brandon is voted out of the new tribe, narrowly missing the first seat on the jury.
