It was revealed that if Danielle had taken Terry to the final 2, she still would have lost by a vote of 5-2. Cirie and Bruce would have voted for Danielle, while Austin, Sally, Courtney, Shane and Aras would have voted for Terry.
Terry won his fourth reward in the individual phase of the game, a "Survivor" record. Along with his five individual immunities, Terry has the most ever victories (nine) during the individual phase of any "Survivor" season.
After returning from his reward, Aras farts while in the shelter.
Terry is sent to Exile Island for the fourth time, a record that will eventually be tied by three others: Candice from Cook Islands, Earl from Fiji, and Jessica (Sugar) from Gabon.
This marked the fourth time that the final four Tribal Council was a 2-2 tie. However, it was only the second to feature the fire building tie-breaker (Palau was the other).
Each remaining contestant is from a different original tribe: Terry (La Mina), Cirie (Casaya), Aras (Viveros), and Danielle (Bayoneta).
Boston Powers, Shane's son, at age 14 is the youngest person ever to appear in an on-location episode of "Survivor" during the course of game play. Children of contestants have been seen in reunion and recap shows, and in videos or webcams, but Boston is the youngest to be on an episode while the game is still going on.
Terry won immunity for the fifth straight time, joining Colby Donaldson and Tom Westman from Palau as the only contestants to win five in a series. Terry and Colby are also the only ones to win five in a row.
Terry won his fourth Immunity challenge in a row. Terry, Colby Donaldson from Outback, and Kelly Wiglesworth from Borneo are the only contestants to accomplish this feat.
Bruce becomes the first castaway ever to be eliminated from the game for medical reasons, but still be allowed to participate as a jury member.
Instead of final comments from an ousted contestant, the closing credits pay homage to Bruce and show video highlights of his time in the game, including his karate demonstrations at the Panama village.
This was the second time in Survivor history that a castaway had been evacuated from the island and from the game. The first time was during season two in the Australian Outback, when Michael Skupin fell in his camp's fire and burned his hands.
Terry won immunity for the third straight episode, thereby becoming the first contestant ever to win the first three individual immunity challenges in a series.
New scenes in this episode included, but were not limited to:
- Bonding in the form of singing a Spanish song
- Using a machete to crack open a coconut
- Late at night, Bruce practices karate moves.
- Casaya has a breakdown late at night, following Bruce being sent to Exile Island for the second time.
Almost all of the new footage featured the Casaya tribe.
For the first time since Borneo (season 1), a castaway was voted out without the majority of votes against them. Bobby received only three of the seven votes but was still voted out.
With Misty's ouster, this is the first season in which females are voted out in the first three episodes. Females were voted out in the first two episodes of Survivor: Africa (Diane and Jessie).
Tina was originally chosen to participate in "Survivor: Guatemala". After the death of her son, she decided not to participate.
For the first time since season 7, only 16 contestants compete for the million dollars.
Survivor is heavily edited to tell a story. In the scene where Jeff welcomes the players into the game, it appears Courtney winked at Aras. Look carefully at both her hair and the fact that Danielle is at one shot on her right, then on her left. Courtney actually winked at the older women, but it was manipulated to appear to be aimed at Aras.
