Episode Summary

EDIT
The Giant Bacteria
AIRED:
The swamp-dwelling Dr. Viper mutates his fellow evildoer Morbulus into a hulking bacteria blob following Morbulus' humiliating defeat by the Swat Kats. The bacteria monster then goes on a rampage through Megakat City, inconveniently dividing into two anytime it's hit. Viper's plan is for the monsters to break into the supposedly impenetrable Megakat Biochemical Labs and steal Katalyst 99, a rare biochemical compound he wants. With normal weapons ineffective against the giant bacteria, the Swat Kats quickly discover that the creatures have one weakness: electricity.moreless

  • When Dr. Viper turns the villian Morbulos into a bacteria monster the Swat Kats have to stop it and Viper.

    9.3
This is one of the best episodes of the series! To start off we learn of T-Bone and Razor's idenities as two mechanics who were kicked out of the Enforcers for destroying a building (though the latter isn't revealed until next episode). Then there's Dr. Viper my favorite villian as I always liked the pshyco scientist villians why I'm not sure I just do. We also learn more about the Swat Kats relationship with Callie who's they're biggest supporter and it's funny to see Chance a.k.a. T-Bone try to flirt with her though she may like Jake a.k.a. Razor more or is trying to make Chance jealous. Well I guess the only thing left to say is great episode!moreless
  • Don't screw with the SWAT Kats!

    9.2
My God, how I love this episode! There are so many cool stuff in it. First on the list is Morbulus - probably one of the most original villains I've ever seen! Unfortunately, he appeared only for a little while before he became giant slimy bacteria, but OK, I can live with that. This ep also introduce Dr.Viper, the coolest villain in the cartoon. There is also couple of rare scenes for cherishing, for instance, the only scene in the show where we saw Callie with Chance and Jake. I'm not shore why, but I love that scene. I just wish they did something more about that "Callie - Chance 'n' Jake" relationship. The entire episode's got all those stuffs that made this show awesome. Great music, funny lines, great action, cool weapons (Razor's motocycle, my personal favorite), and a great villain who just begs you to kick his ass. Another great episode for an even greater show. SWAT KATS RULES!!!moreless
  • Whoa, he DOES have eyes in the back of his head!

    8.4
"The Giant Bacteria" does not seem to be very popular among fans of the series, in part due to the shoddy animation and the unusually dark tone. However I hold this episode in high regard for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it was the first episode I ever saw and it's what introduced me to the series. Secondly, there's Morbulus. He's not around for very long before Dr. Viper mutates him (his transformation scene scared me as a kid) but his unique gimmick, a second pair of eyes on the back of his head, makes him one of the most unique one-shot villains in the show. This is not to say the episode is without its flaws. As noted, the animation is pretty bad in some places, and I was always annoyed that they apparently killed off Dr. Zyme, when "The Origin of Dr. Viper" proves he can be a very interesting supporting character. Also (and this is not really a problem per se, just an observation), the purple bacteria monsters remind me way too much of the Smooze from "My Little Pony the Movie." All in all though, "The Giant Bacteria" holds a special place in my heart and I consider it a genuine classic overall.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (12)

    • When Callie says "Bye, Jake" outside the garage her tail is colored blond like her hair when in fact her tail should be the same color as her fur(which is very light brown)

    • When Deputy Mayor Briggs exits Jake and Chance's garage the background outside the garage changes between shots.

    • When we see the Turbokat flying above the Salvage yard after the capturing of Morbulus, the yard sign reads "Megacat City Salvage Yard". It should be "Megakat" with a "k" instead of a "c"

    • It is never revealed why Morbulus was destroying oil refineries.

    • Goof: When the episode is ending T-Bone and Razor are shown into the Turbokat, but T-Bone has brown fur instead of yellow and Razor yellow fur instead of brown.

    • This is Doctor Viper's first appearance.

    • When Callie pulls into Jake 'n' Chance's Garage, she is sitting on the wrong side of the car (the right side as opposed to the left).

    • Similar to the farmer, it is unclear whether or not Dr. Zyme was killed. It is implied that he was saved when the bacteria monster was distracted by Feral's chopper while reaching for him, but he is never seen again in the episode regardless.

    • During the scene where the bacteria monster eats the farmer's cow, the farmer mysteriously disappears when Dr. Viper shows up. Where did he go? The cutaway to Viper was too quick for him to have been eaten also.

    • Because Morbulus literally had eyes in the back of his head, the bacteria monster starts out with four eyes. The eyes are divided up evenly among the different monsters when the original creature multiplies. However, the individual bacteria monsters (there are three) keep turning up with a different number of eyes. I.e., at one point there are three one-eyed monsters, and the final bacteria goes from having one eye, to two eyes, then back to one eye again.

    • Despite knowing that there are more than one bacteria monster, the SWAT Kats only bring along one Megavolt Missile. Similarly, Dr. Zyme only gives Commander Feral one dose of the antibody formula.

    • When Morbulus' supposedly empty clothes are pulled from the water, his ears and tail are clearly visible.

  • QUOTES (17)

    • (while chasing Morbulus' plane)
T-Bone: Can you get a lock on him?
Razor: Working on it. (locks in on Morbulus) Locked and reloaded, T-Bone. One octopus missile, on its way.
      (Octopus Missile launch)
T-Bone: Heh, sucker doesn't even see it coming. (Morbulus easily avoids the missile and it hits the balcony of a building) He suckered us. How'd you miss him, sure shot?

    • (While chasing Morbulus across the sky, he finally reaches the Megakat refinery)
T-Bone: Crud. He's headed straight for the Megakat refinery.
Razor: Head for that cloud bank, I have an idea.
T-Bone: (sarcastic) I hope it's better than your aim.

    • (After Callie lefts a car in the workshop)
Chance: (After flirting with Callie) Ha! Did you hear that? She's crazy about me!
      (Callie comes back)
Callie: (With a flirting voice) Bye Jake! (Jake waves and at the same time Chance is shocked).

    • (After capturing Morbulus)
T-Bone: What'll it be, Razor? Dunk, or deliver?
Razor and T-Bone: (With thumbs down) Dunk.
(The Swat Kats let Morbulus fall several feet into the ocean below)
      Razor: Belly flop?
      (Morbulus splashes into the water)
      T-Bone: Mega belly flop.

    • Jake: I don't think it's a good idea to put these turbo-plugs in Callie's engine, Chance.
Chance: I say she's gotta have a lot of horse power in case of an emergency.
Jake: I say you're gonna blow the engine.
Chance: Jake, I'm a pilot. I know what an engine can handle. (starts engine) See? Purs like a kitten. (steps on accelerator) Growls like a tiger.
(The engine blows up in Jake's face)
      Jake: Blows like a volcano.

    • Commander Feral: Miss Briggs, are you all right?
Callie Briggs: Yes, thanks to the SWAT Kats. Whoever they are.
Commander Feral: Thanks to them, half of Megakat City is without power!
T-Bone: Hey, you know a better way to cook a giant bacteria?

    • (after Morbulus dodges the Swat Kats' missle)
Razor: That guy must have eyes in the back of his head.
(The Turbokat moves over Morbulus' jet so that they're cockpit to cockpit)
Razor: Whoa, he does have eyes in the back of his head!
      T-Bone: No excuses.

    • Jake: Hey, there's Feral.
Chance: Guy looks like he hasn't bit the litterbox in a week.

    • Morbulus: No way I'm gonna rot in some Megakat City prison!
      (Dr. Viper appears behind him)
Dr. Viper: I'll put you to much better use than that!

    • Chance: That Callie sure is pretty.
Jake: Yeah, but she's gonna be pretty mad if we don't get her car running.

    • Morbulus: You'll have to do better than that, Swat Kats, to catch Morbulus! Or... die trying!

    • T-Bone: Any idea what to throw at these guys?
Razor: How 'bout Feral? Thanks to him, we've got three to fight.

    • Commander Feral: Normal weapons won't stop those monsters!
Mayor Manx: You've made that abundantly clear, Feral!

    • Mayor Manx: I'm coming, too! I don't want to be around here if this stuff doesn't work!
Commander Feral: You're a coward, Manx.
Mayor Manx: You don't get to be mayor for ten terms without being cautious!

    • Dr. Viper: You were always an arrogant fool, Dr. Zyme. My bacteria is immune to antibiotics!

    • (After Feral blames the Swat Kats for Morbulus's escape, Chance angrily throws a can of milk at the TV, busting it)
Jake: Aw, great. Morbulus is gone, so's our TV.

    • Morbulus: So, this is the secret lab of the legendary Dr. Viper.
Dr. Viper: Quite an eyeful, isn't it Morbulus?
Morbulus: Very impressive. Looks like you've got everything a mad scientist needs, right here.

  • NOTES (4)

    • One of the reasons "SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron" was cancelled, was the violence content. This episode features a giant bacteria monster having swallowed a subway train, which is supposedly still filled with the citizens that were on it when the monster attacked the train.

    • Morbulus was originally called Occulus, until it was discovered that there was already a Fantastic Four villain with that name.

    • Ann Gora has a different camerakat here than her usual one, Jonny.

    • This was the first episode of the series to be completed and was also the story concept that Christian and Yvon Tremblay used to sell the show.
