Lt. Harrelson asks for the assistance of S.I.D., which is the Police Department's Scientific Investigation Division.
Street: Question, Lieutenant: why us? That's a possible case of piracy, homicide. That's hardly our jurisdiction.
Lt. Harrelson: Well, the nature of the cargo puts it right in our lap; twelve cases of highly unstable, very volatile Tri-Nitro-Toluene, TNT. Somebody hijacked it, killed a man in the process. Those two punks we grabbed at that market today were nothing compared to this. We've got to find that stuff before half the harbor blows up right in our faces.
(as the team is looking over the area from where the tug disappeared)
Luca: Anybody says anything about a needle in a haystack; I'm going to take my vacation time right now.
McCabe: Is that a promise?
(as Lt. Harrelson enters Professor Darby's quarters on her ship)
Kate Darby: Don't take another step. (pause) Don't move, please. (pause) Oh, great.
Lt. Harrelson: Well, excuse me. I hope I haven't ruined an experiment for you.
Kate Darby: It was even more important than that. You've ruined my lunch.
Lt. Harrelson: Oh, I am sorry.
Kate Darby: How do you suppose, you, you make, a, a, a soufflé work?
Lt. Harrelson: Well, first I guess it would take a kitchen that doesn't move.
Kate Darby: I guess you're right about that.
Lt. Harrelson: I'm Lieutenant Harrelson, S.W.A.T.
Kate Darby: Is there a first name that goes with that?
Lt. Harrelson: Dan.
Kate Darby: Hi, Dan. I'm Kate Darby. What can I do for you?
Lt. Harrelson: There's a tugboat missing, along with a barge of TNT it was towing.
Kate Darby: You can search the ship, I don't have it.
Lt. Harrelson: I was hoping you might have seen something.
Kate Darby: I'm sorry, I've been cooped up down here ever since we tied up. If it's not protoplasm experiments, it's students with problems, or...
Lt. Harrelson: Soufflés.
Kate Darby: (laughs) Right. Do you have time for a cup of coffee?
Lt. Harrelson: A fast one. Thank you.
(leaving the Casa Madrid restaurant)
Kate Darby: That was a lovely dinner. Thank you.
Lt. Harrelson: Don't mention it. My pleasure.
Kate Darby: You know, for a tough, hard-bitten policeman, you're a very nice, kind man.
Lt. Harrelson: Look, do me a favor – keep that a secret.
Kate Darby: (laughs) Wild horse couldn't drag it out of me.
Kate Darby: I don't know how to thank you.
Lt. Harrelson: You don't have to say anything, Kate.
Kate Darby: All that time on the boat, waiting, thinking; went over my whole life and the choices I made, good and bad.
Lt. Harrelson: Yes, I know. And you usually come to the conclusion that if you had it all to do over again, you'd do it all the same way.
Kate Darby: You know something, you're right. But for a while there though I, well, I was thinking about being home and maybe having a husband, a couple of kids, but soon all that faded away. You know what? I don't even mind leaving tomorrow.
Lt. Harrelson: Tomorrow?
Kate Darby: Mhmm.
Lt. Harrelson: Where you headed?
Kate Darby: South Atlantic. We're going to do some experiments on plankton.
Lt. Harrelson: Lucky plankton.
Kate Darby: (laughs) I'll bet you say that to all the marine biologists.
Lt. Harrelson: No, just to the ones I'd like to see again.
