Sweat (1996)

Show Summary

This short-lived Australian soap set in a West Coast sports academy, very unoriginally named in the show as the Sports West Academy, is best known for launching the career of Heath Ledger. Although Martin Henderson (windtalkers, Bride & Prejudice) received top billing as swimmer Tom Nash, it was Ledger's role as gay cyclist Snowie who garnered the most attention. Initially in the closet, Snowie's 'coming out' storyline unfolded slowly in the show's first two months when finally Ledger's role was beefed up. But far from Ledger alone carrying the show, Sweat featured a top notch cast of young actors and solid writing. Its eventual failure to spark big ratings was most likely due to the fact that it was played more as straight drama rather than as a mass appeal soap.
