On the heels of last week's crippling Bunheads cancellation, ABC Family announced today that it's renewed the Peabody Award-winning series Switched at Birth for Season 3. The network has also asked for additional episodes—described by the network as "back-order pickups"—of new summer dramas Twisted and The Fosters. All three series are expected to return alongside veteran drama Pretty Little Liars in January 2014. Specific episode counts were not revealed.
"ABC Family has always been a home for groundbreaking storytelling with iconic characters and families, and we’re thrilled to have The Fosters and Twisted join our lineup as breakout summer hits," network president Michael Riley said in a statement. “We are very proud of the original series we continue to foster, bringing real and relatable characters to life for our viewers and [we] know they are destined to become part of the zeitgeist alongside Switched at Birth and Pretty Little Liars."
Switched at Birth is the first mainstream TV series to feature deaf or hearing-impaired series regulars and features scenes shot entirely in American Sign Language. Twisted is a one-hour mystery about a 16-year-old who returns to his high school—and his old life—after five years in juvenile detention, and has paired well with its lead-in, ABC Family's other teen mystery series, Pretty Little Liars on Tuesday nights. The Fosters is a multi-ethnic family drama focusing on an unconventional family of foster children and biological children being raised by two mothers.
Which of these three series, if any, do you watch? If you could bring Bunheads back by canceling one of them, would you? (And if so, which one would it be?)
