Tales From The Crypt
Based on the legendary and gruesome EC Comics from publisher William M. Gaines, which were The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Crime SuspenStories, Shock SuspenStories, and Tales from the Crypt to name a few, this horror anthology featured stories of murder, the supernatural, voodoo, vampires, werewolves, greed, gore, humor and usually had a twist ending of sorts. Some of Hollywood's biggest names like Demi Moore, Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Whoopi Goldberg and Michael J. Fox were featured, either in front or behind the camera. Hosting duties fell to everyone's favorite decaying corpse, the Crypt Keeper.
The series aired originally on HBO from 1989 to 1996 with edited episodes airing on the FOX network in the early to mid 90's.
In this film, Rafe mentions the series when he says, "I feel like I'm in a bad Tales from the Crypt episode". This line has great meaning because it showcases the series' tongue-in-cheek attitude as it didn't mind making fun of itself from time to time.
The publisher of EC comics and one of the most famous and recognizable personalities and talents in the comic industry. He became as well known for his adult-cutting edge comics such as Tales From The Crypt and Mad Magazine as he did for his famous testimony against the U.S. congress in 1954, in which he defended the effects of his morbid comics on young children in the 1950's.
In this film, the crypt Rafe enters has "Gaines" engraved above the entrance, an homage to the iconic publisher.
