A Choice of Dreams
AIRED:
A mob boss suffering from a terminal illness is visited by an odd man who claims that he has the ability to offer the dying a choice of dreams after death. The mob boss is skeptical at first and threatens to kill the man for insulting his intelligence. After some contemplation, he accepts the man's offer and subjects to his medical experimentations. At first, the boss experiences nothing but pleasant memories. However, after a few days, memories of the people he has destroyed through his evil and ruthless lifestyle begin to creep into his dreams. The mob boss reports these dreams to the man and demands that these images not recur after he dies. The man assures the mob boss that the disturbing memories are only a momentary side effect that will subside after further medical alterations. As the mob boss subjects himself to the final operation which will complete the procedure, the horrible memories become permanent, completely taking the place of the pleasant ones. Inside the mob boss's mind, he begins to scream in horror as the man places his brain in a glass jar, welcoming him to hell.moreless

  • A dying mob boss meets a scientist who, for a price, offers to allow him to essentially cheat death and spend eternity dreaming.

    9.0
This is one of my favorite episodes! It has one of the creepiest endings you will find in the entire series, largely because it maintains a degree of realism and credibility, revealing its supernatural/science fiction elements only near the end.

An elderly mob boss is diagnosed with cancer, with only a few months to live. Not long after hearing the news, and threatening his doctor, he is visited by a strange man who makes him a tempting offer.

For a substantial fee, this mysterious scientist will perform an experimental operation that will allow the mobster to abandon his dying body and spend eternity in the pleasant dream of his choice.

The mobster is initially dismissive of the offer, but as the pain of his illness increases he decides to go through with the operation, after killing his loyal body guard and several other other members of the mafia.

What happens? Well, the scientist basically removes the brain for the body, and hooks it up to a strange machine that forces the mobster to relive all the pain and suffering he caused other people, including his deceased wife.

As the episode ends, the mysterious scientist welcome the mobster to hell, and the camera reveals that a long line of brains hooked to similar machines.moreless
  • One of the creepiest episodes, with a excellent ending. A mafia boss, who has spent years of his life, disrepecting others to get ahead, hopes for an alternative to dying.

    8.5
This episode is about a an old mafia boss, who has spent most of his life betraying others to gain a great reputation. Unfortunately, a doctor visits him during one of his meetings, and tells him he has terminal cancer. Although this episode doesn't feature any monsters or ghouls, and it does have strange character, that appears to be in many aspects, the devil. Although this isn't revealed in the episode, it becomes obivious where the boss actually going by the very end. It's very reflective of most darkside episodes, because it has twist ending, but also because there a creepy indication, or strange character or image put in the story to indicate something bad is going to happen. The doctor may have been an associate of the devil, but it's really not revealed. The ending is quite unpleasant, as the man's bad dreams, really do become reality.... literally. The episode is kinda of a "alternate reality" and scifi type one in a sense, because the man let himself sell his soul to a doctor, who he thought was going to send him to a paradise of favorite dreams, and ends only seeing the negative ones in the end, and it soon turns into nightmare in the end. The man was too greedy and selfish, to realize that he was actually being sent to hell, in a computerized form, so it was alternate reality, a little bit.moreless

  • Immortality comes at a cost.

    9.3
I dunno why there are those that voted this episode so negatively, there are other episodes that are far worse than this...

Anyways, a dying mob boss who always gets what he wants and one doctor who seemingly wants to grant those wishes. Of course the price is steep at $10mil, but for a crime boss shouldn't that be a non issue? I just don't like how he treated his right hand man like that by killing him after promising he'd keep the $10 mil, so after that point I hoped the mob boss would get a really bad end coming to him.

Fortunately, it does as the doctor selects only the bad memories and subjects the guy's brain to them for perhaps eternity. I do have to say that was pretty icky seeing the brain taken out like that though. I'm surprised it wasn't censored or something.moreless
  • A mob boss is dying and a man offers him a chance to dream forever

    9.4
Now I really did enjoy this episode, thanks a lot to the fast paced writing and the acting of Abe V. He makes a very convincing criminal in this episode that ends with him getting what is coming to him. No, it is not a scary episode, but it is very well written and feels like an episode worthy of the Twilight Zone. The ending wasn't that spectacular and was kind of predictable, but it is all forgiveable since the story itself is just so fun. If you are a fan of mob type stories, then I highly recommend this episode.moreless
