AIRED:
A couple inadvertently buy a magic lamp that contains a genie. Unfortunately, the genie is anything but amiable. Confined in the lamp for thousands of years and still trapped, he refuses to grant wishes and instead terrorizes the couples with plagues, rains of frogs, etc. The husband finally has himself committed, but a few days later his wife brings him home. Their apartment is now richly decorated and they have plenty of money. The genie is now an amiable and willing wish-granter. The wife's solution to freeing the genie: a can opener.moreless

After a couple of so-so early episodes, Tales From the Darkside really seems to have found its footing.

Taken from a story by Harlan Ellison, this one starts out promising, as a fast-talking, happy go lucky guy in a straitjacket wants to tell you his story.

He goes on to tell us what brought him to this place. Turns out he and his wife were out one day and stumbled upon an Arabian tent in the middle of an empty field. And how can they pass up that lovely old lamp?

Tales From the Darkside never seemed to have much money to spend on an episode. The most memorable ones got by on strong writing and/or good atmosphere and this one has it. Very lightweight and humorous, though the humor may not be to everyone's taste.moreless
