Tales from the Neverending Story

Show Summary

Twelve-year-old Bastian Balthazar Bux had lost the wonderful imagination he had as a child somewhere between growing older, watching TV, going to school and playing with his Gameboy. But when his mother dies suddenly, Bastian's limitless imagination is reborn. Bastian comes across a magical book, "The Neverending Story," in a curious little bookstore. The book is about a country called Fantasia. The adventure of a lifetime begins Atreyu finds himself in a battle against the sinister force of The Nothing. This terrible force threatens to destroy Fantasia and its ruler, the Childlike Empress. Only Atreyu, a 14-year-old Woodland boy and unlikely hero, can save her and find a cure for The Nothing. The story continues as Bastian reads it and both the real world and Fantasia are mixed together. Bastian's experiences in the real world; such as his mourning, his new, sometimes tumultuous life with his dad, his problems with a school bully and his terror of a new, sadistic substitute teacher, are mirrored by Atreyu's experiences in Fantasia. Along with Atreyu, Bastian overcomes obstacles, learns important life lessons, and gains insights that help him adjust to the sudden death of his mom. About Fantasia Fantasia is the whimsical kingdom of "The Neverending Story" that springs from Bastian's imagination. It is filled with magical cities, landscapes, plants and creatures as well as unforgettable characters, both good and evil. Bastian visits Fantasia to find solutions to his real world dilemmas. But malevolent forces of conformity and emptiness, embodied by The Nothing, threaten Fantasia's very existence. On the side of goodness and light is the Childlike Empress. She rules benevolently from the Ivory Tower and represents all the hopes and dreams of Fantasians. Lurking in the Seeing Hand Palace of the Dark City is her sister, Xayide, the Dark Princess. Her mission is to facilitate the spread of The Nothing by annihilating imagination, creativity and diversity from the world of Fantasia. Xayide knows that if people don't dream, don't create and don't hope they make better Drones, brainwashed, robot-like workers of the Dark City. The series can be shown as 13 one hour episodes or as 4 two hour movies.moreless

  • You could tell right from the start that tonight’s episode was going to be a good one.

You could tell right from the start that tonight’s episode was going to be a good one. In the previous cliff-hanger we were left with a fatal car crash, not knowing anything else about the accident besides the fact that it happened. Tonight’s story opens with Alf in a dark hospital waiting room. In the background two nurses are talking. One says "he hasn't said a word since he found out". The other replies: "Some people need time... she's only been dead for 2 hours".moreless
  • We bought the series by mistake thinking it was the original movie, but we found this series to be the best entertainment in a long time! My 2 year old daughter, myself and husband and mother in law all loved this highly engaging story that mixed fantasymoreless

This series was so adventurous and well written that we couldn't help but fall in love with it. The casting was excellent and the costumes and scenery were very imaginative and breathtaking. I can't believe we did not see this tv series before now. My daughter really liked the colors and special effects as well as the flying dragon. My mother in law also really enjoyed the series. It kept her entertained and awake, while other shows lull her to sleep. My husband, who is hard to please, enjoyed all the excitement, wide range of characters, good versus evil, and those constant "on the edge of your seat" moments where none of us could predict what would happen next. I am addicted and want more, more, more!moreless
  • this story 's title says it all its a neverending story.

i didnt watch this show on tv, i got 2 of the 4 dvd's on sale here in the netherlands and i bought them because i already watched both first movies.(i idnt see the third with Jason James Richter as Bastian )

After viewing the first 2 parts i was totally fascinated with how the story would end so i went and bought the other parts.

There is a part where we see bastian and then there is the world where Atreyu and hisfriends live. After watching the movies it was a bit disapointing to see such a new actor portray bastian. But he played really well but i watch Barret Oliver and Jonathan Brandis play the same part and i still think jonathan played the role the best.May he rest in peace .
