    This review contains spoilers.

Although I haven't seen episodes from the latter end of the season yet, 'Escape from Death Island' still probably ranks as one of my favourite episodes of 'Tales of the Gold Monkey'.

I love the plot; it is simplistic yet detailed at the same time, and kept me engrossed throughout. Unlike a couple of early 'Gold Monkey' stories, which had good plots but were rather dragged out in places, the pace of 'Escape from Death Island' does not let up at any point, remaining totally exhilarating throughout. It also really captures the feel of the old 1930s & 1940s adventure films that the makers were going for with the series.

I love the guest character of Henri, the mute prisoner who befriends Jack. As covered in my review from the Pilot, the series was only run once here in the United Kingdom, when I was quite young so couldn't fully remember the stories; but I know if it had been re-run a bit later, Henri was the sort of one-off guest character that I would have loved as a kid.

Later on we find that the governors of Death Island have actually been bumped off, and their places have been taken by prisoners; we get some vague plot of them waiting for a visiting cargo boat to attack / escape on, but this is never really made all that clear. One might ask why they just didn't escape anyway (maybe that's why they needed the vessel?), but it doesn't matter too much and didn't spoil my enjoyment of the likeable tale.

All-in-all, I really like this episode; as I say, probably one of my favourites from the whole series. I give this one a top scoring 10 out of 10.moreless

    • During the climatic escape from Death Island, the guards start shooting at the Goose, and Jack is seen to duck down and cover his eyes with his paw - this shot is clearly played backwards (originally, Jack would have had his paws over his eyes and then looked up). Edit
