    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • The story by Roald Dahl was published under the title of Nunc Dimittis, the first two words of a well-known canticle in the original Latin. The traditional English version of the first line is "Lord, now lettest Thou thy servant depart in peace." This seems to be an example of television's "dumbing down" habit.

    • QUOTES (1)

      • Roald Dahl: Years ago, when I started buying oil paintings in country house auctions all over England, I decided I'd better learn to clean and restore them myself. So I did. One day, I bought a small painting for twenty-five pence from a junk shop in Brighton. It didn't even have a stretcher, it was just a loose canvas and it had almost certainly been cut out of it's frame by a thief. When I cleaned off the top layer of paint, there, underneath it, was a beautiful little Renoir landscape. The idea of the story you're going to see now, actually came to me while I was working on this peach.

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • The title is an allusion to the age-old English translation of the Nunc Dimittis - "Lord, now lettest Thou thy servant depart in peace".
