  • A brilliant episode of Tales of the Unexpected. Chilling and heart-wrenching.

This is an absolute classic. I'd read about it before I was lucky enough to catch a repeat on ITV3. I've seen a few episodes of Tales of the Unexpected and this is the best I've ever seen. It's well plotted and almost ahead of it's time. It's only become more relevant over the years with the abduction of children. It's so sad that Sylvia has such an unhappy life and her fate ends up as this. I wondered if her mother was alive would she have been a target for the sinister man?

You watch it transfixed, willing Sylvia to be clever and escape. Genuinely chilling, a must-see.moreless

This episode ,when first watched as a boy in the mid-80's,

was ceaselessly dark and the twist-end so unpleasant as to chill right through me.

In truth, this is a gripping episode of 'Tales...' and would come highly recommended by any fan of the show I'm sure.

Many episodes could be bleak but this is extremely bleak and having watched it again recently some of the key things to why it's so memorable, aside from the (still) very sinister twist end, are the following:-

We see that the central character, Sylvia, has a very sad life and lives with an older female relative and you build a rapport with her as you see how depressed she is which is why the ending is so powerful but ,ultimately, thoroughly depressing and sad.

Another thing is the subtle hints as to a murder having already taken place in the town so we see that all is not well there.

The scene with the girl and the stalker on the bus is painful to watch and you're hoping the bus driver will kick him off and by now you're desperate for a happy ending but this is Tales of the Unexpected unfortunately.

It's a brilliant piece of TV though and as shocking today, if not more so , than 20+ years ago.

    Memorable and chilling.....moreless
