      • The subplot of Alex mistaking the old man for his estranged father came from James L. Brooks' real life. Brooks' own father had abandoned himself and his mother. Brooks entered a hospital room, saw a frail looking old man, addressed him as "Daddy," and then found out he was in the wrong room. His long unseen father was in the next room in realitivly good health. Edit
