  • A sweet episode.

    8.5
I really like this episode. Blackfire, Starfire's sister, visits the Titans and she becomes very popular with the rest of the team, while Starfire feels she's being "pushed away" and that the team likes her sister more than they like her.

I HATED "Transformation" because it had Starfire, such a sweet, well meaning character being depressed pretty much throughout, she's depressed here as well, but there is a major difference, it's not mean-spirited. The team never makes fun of Starfire, or completely ignores her. They listen to her when she speaks, willing to have a movie night and such, it's just that Blackfire is such a commanding presence. I loved how Starfire tried to keep Blackfire away from Robin, the "kissing scene" was pretty dumb though, I would've liked if that scene got a little more attention, maybe handled a little more serious and just not be another brief, cheap gag. The episode also does not show that Starfire realizes that the kiss was fake.

The writer, Amy Wolfram does not pile on the sadness and frustration of Starfire, she lets the events and her feelings unfold slowly and ending the episode with a sweet final conversation between Starfire and Robin. The confrontation between Starfire and Blackfire was good, but could've been better. The music in Teen Titans is a mixed bag, here it's hit and miss as well.

"Sisters" is one of the best episodes from season 1.moreless
  • By far my favorite episode of Teen Titans ever!

    10
Not only the best episode of the season but the best episode of the series, 'Sisters' is the whole package. When Blackfire, Starfire's older sister comes to visit her and the rest of the Titans, she manages to befriend them all and get to know them in ways Starfire only wishes that she herself could. But what none of them know is that Blackfire isn't here for a visit, but something much more criminal. This story line is enough to get me hooked right away, but watching the episode was awesome. It had amazing graphics and color, it was well-drawn, it gave an in-depth look into each character, and, of course, gave us a taste of the adorable Robin/Starfire pairing. I love this ep.!moreless
  • This may be my favorite episode out of the whole entire series.

    10
This was simply an outstanding episode!

Now Starfire is probably my favorite character. And seeing this episode, was no disapointement for my favorite character.

Blackfire, was simply a great character. She may be my favorite villain too. It's just sad to hear that Blackfire hates her own little sister. And also seeing everyone so caught up into Blackfire and seeing Starfire sad about it was just... well sad. Hahah... Well, I guess Robin didn't really but he kind of did. Once again, fight scene excelled on this episode. And the animation was fantastic too. The last fight scene between Blackfire and Starfire was excellent. It is so obvious they saved the fight for later in the series, and I guess it's better if they did, because they can make sure that fans tune in to every episode to await Blackfire's next appearance. And the last moment between Robin and Starfire had this awww... moment.

I'm looking forward to seeing Blackfire again and hoping to see a conclusion between Starfire and Robin. This episode was sweet, had excellent animation, little bits of humor and action packed making this a very entertaining episode. One of the best parts of this episode was the music. One of my favorites indeed. Simply outstanding! 10.moreless
  • Starfire's evil sister, Blackfire, pays the Titans a visit.

    9.7
It's kind of embarrassing to say that Blackfire is so hot because she's a cartoon character, but she was. Blackfire is Starfire's older and more versatile sister and she comes to visit. Starfire gets kind of jealous and feels hurt that her friends would rather hang with her sister. You can kinda tell that when they were younger maybe Blackfire wasn't really nice to Star. The Centauri Police Force come after Star and she doesn't know why. When they put two and two together they realize that Blackfire was actually the one that stole the moon rocks. When Blackfire tries flying away, Starfire catches up and they have a much waited for battle. Blackfire goes to prison and promises to get revenge. I really hope to see her more later on in the series.moreless
  • Starfire learns that she's important to the team.

    7.9
Ok so at the beggining of this episode all of the titans are at a carnival and they were having a good time but when an alien probe comes and trys to kidnap Starfire, they quickly save her. Later, as if by chance Blackfire, Starfire's sister comes along and gives Starfire this necklace that she really likes. But Starfire is also very sad because everyone seems to like Blackfire more than her. So they go to this club, and as Starfire is about to leave because she was feeling inferior to her team Robin talks to her but a spaceship trys to take Starfire away. Robin jumps on, and battles with this alien dude and defeats him. They are in the middle of nowhere when the other titans show up. The alien people accuse Starfire of stealing the necklace Blackfire gave to her, but it's not so. Starfire sees Blackfire and beats her in battle and Blackfire gets arrested. I thought this was a pretty good episode, although it seemed just a little rushed at the end. And Raven wasn't the main character but what the heck it was pretty good. Yep.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (20)

    • We find out that the Draconis nebula is forbidden to travel through because it is full of black holes.

    • Just before Starfire and Blackfire fight, Starfire demands that Blackfire return what she had stolen and give herself up to the police. Yet Robin had already returned the stolen diamond to the police approximately 20 seconds previously.

Response: Maybe Blackfire stole more than just the diamond.

    • The Centauri police are supposed to be after Blackfire for her crimes, right? If that's the case, then they must know what she looks like, especially since they were apparently doing a search across the whole galaxy. Therefore, shouldn't they have known beforehand that Starfire wasn't the culprit, since she has a different hair color and eyes? Did they simply have the description as 'Tamaranian girl' or something? Granted, they may have seen the stolen Centauri moon diamond on her chest as proof that she was the thief, but she was clearly being chased by one of the probes BEFORE Blackfire gave her the diamond.

    • Aren't Tameranians supposed to speak English without slang? So, then how come Blackfire can speak slang?

Response: Tameraneans are probably not incapable of speaking slang. Perhaps Blackfire just knows the language of Earthlings better than Starfire does. She seems to know more about Earth all together, anyway.

    • When Starfire says she going to recite all 6,000 verses of a friendship poem, Cyborg's eye that's usually red is actually white.

    • If this was Blackfire's first time on Earth, how can she speak perfectly fluent English? Not to mention that she knows more about the customs of those her age than Starfire, who has been on Earth longer.

Response: In "Go", we see that Starfire learnt English by kissing Robin. Blackfire is seen to be quite flirty, so it's entirely possible that she kissed several guys shortly after arriving, thus allowing her to learn English to a greater extent than Starfire.

    • Why didn't Raven use her powers to dismantle one of the probes instead of simply pelting it with harmless crates and things?

    • How was Robin sticking to the bottom of the ship, anyway? He couldn't have stick-to material in his gloves, could he?

    • Why did the probe attack Beast Boy, also? Besides the fact that the probe didn't know what happened to the first probe when the other went to stop Cyborg, it merely pushed him.

    • How could Robin have ended up on the bottom of the Centauri ship if he missed Starfire's leg and was too far to push off from the tower.

    • How could Blackfire say ''I love this song'' if it's her first time on earth?

Response: She was trying to get Starfire jealous because she could see the relationship she has with Robin.

    • After the Titans defeat the first probe, Starfire's eyes look more like Blackfire's eyes.

    • When the one alien cop cuts open the engine and takes out a sizeable chunk of it, the ship is forced to land. However, they take off immediately after capturing Blackfire.

    • When the one Alpha Centauri cop cuts open the engine of their ship, the other one reprimands him with a "Lobo, you fool!" comment. The cops are named Kai and Cron, with no Lobo amongst them.

    • How did the probes know to attack the other Titans? The first probe was destroyed before it could relay any sort of signal to the alien ship. The aliens and their probes would not know of either Tamaranian's connection to the Titans.

    • At the beginning of the episode, all four probes approach Earth. One enters the atmosphere, while three peel off for other planets. Why send all four to Earth if three are just going elsewhere immediately?

    • After those alien police tell the Teen Titans are under arrest, and when Beast Boy is saying, "You can't be the good guys, we're the good guys," Raven's eyes are crooked.

    • When Blackfire is hurling "Starbolts," her skin on her leg is normal skin. It doesn't have armor on it.

    • On the roof, from Starfire's view, Blackfire isn't wearing gloves. But from Robin's view, she is.

    • Slade is credited in this episode, but actually has no dialogue or appearance, unless it's hidden.

  • QUOTES (27)

    • Kai:: In the name of the Grand Centauri Empire, you are all under arrest. (shows his badge)
Beast Boy:: Uhhh.... You can't be the good guys. We're the good guys.
Kai:: And we are Centauri police.
Cron:: The Tamaranean girl is a liar and a thief. (points to Starfire) She's committed high crimes throughout the entire Centauri System.
Starfire:: I have never even been to the Centauri Moons.
Robin:: (picks up the diamond and looks at it) But I know someone who has. (Starfire gasps in horror and Robin gives the diamond back to the police) You've been chasing the wrong girl. Where's Blackfire?
Beast Boy:: (sees Blackfire flying away) Uhhh...
Robin:: Don't worry, Star. She won't get away with this.
Starfire:: (Starfire's eyes glow) No, she will not! (flies off to confront her sister)

    • Blackfire: (laughing while dancing) Now, don't tell me you big, tough superheroes are afraid of a litte dancing.
Beast Boy: Betcha Cyborg can do the robot. (dancing the robot)

    • Starfire: (About Blackfire) She will be a better Titan than I ever was...

    • Starfire: Hello, Robin and... my sister! Am I interrupting?
Robin: Not at all. Blackfire was just showing me some alien martial arts. How can you never taught me these cool moves?
Blackfire: Probably because she doesn't know them. I always was the better fighter.

    • Robin: (About the robot) Don't see an off-switch. Guess I have to make one.

    • Starfire: (to the alien robot, which is draging her away) Wherever you are taking me, I do not wish to go!

    • Starfire: (about fireworks) On my home planet such explosions would mean the Gordanians are attacking.

    • Robin: No one could ever take your place.

    • Starfire: Earth is full of amazing things, too.
Robin: Best planet I've ever been to.

    • Starfire: Hello, sister.
Blackfire: Oh, you're mad. I know I should have told you I was leaving, but you know how I hate saying goodbyes and-
Starfire: You are a criminal, and you were going to let me take your place in jail.
      Blackfire: Oh. Well, yeah.
Starfire: You will give back what you have stolen and turn yourself over to the police.
Blackfire: And what will you do if I don't? (Blasts Starfire with a starbolt) I always was the better fighter.
Starfire: Not anymore! (Blackfire starts a shower of purple starbolts; Starfire flies through them and shoots her sister's right hand; Starfire then rises over Blackfire and she is captured by the Centauri Police)
Centauri Police: Blackfire of Tamaran, you are under arrest.
Starfire: Farewell, sister. Although you did betray and attack me, it was still very nice to see you.
Blackfire: Next time, it won't be so nice. I will get out of jail, little sister, and I will get even.

    • Blackfire: When we were little, I was always rescuing Starfire.

    • Robin: (Hanging upside down on spaceship, about Starfire) Nobody's taking her away.

    • Robin: (To Starfire) Cotton candy?
Starfire: The last time I ate a ball of cotton, it was white and it did not taste very...
Robin: This is different. (Eats some and gives Starfire some to taste)
      Starfire: Mmm. Oh! It vanished!
Robin: (Laughs) Yeah, it'll do that.

    • Goth Kid: (To Raven) So, do you like show tunes?

    • Beast Boy: (Watching the chase) Who's her new best friend?
Robin: (Pounds fist) Dunno, but I can't wait to meet him.

    • Starfire: I am happy to see her, but Blackfire rules the video games and she is able to share very depressing poems and she knows the cool moves and she always knows when people are not talking about shovels.

    • Blackfire: (in Starfire's clothes) We're going OUT!
Starfire: We are? Where did you...are those my-
Blackfire: Heard about a party downtown. Cool crowd, hot music.
      Beast Boy: Yeah.
      Cyborg: I'm in.
      Robin: Why not?
Blackfire: And it's in a creepy run-down warehouse.
      Cyborg: Whoo!
Beast Boy: I am a party animal!

    • Beast Boy: (At the dance club) Bet 'ya Cy can do the robot.

    • Blackfire: (Has put on a pink wig) How do I look?
Robin: Pink. Look, could you give us a minute here?
Blackfire: (A new song comes on) Oooh! I love this song! (Pulls Robin into the building leaving poor Starfire on the roof all alone)

    • Cyborg: (Wrestling alien robot) I don't know what you did to make this thing mad, Star, but it couldn't hurt to apologize!
      Starfire: I am... sorry?

    • Blackfire: Beast Boy! What's up?
Beast Boy: Nothin' but the ceiling, baby!
      Blackfire: (laughs) Good one.
Beast Boy: See? She thinks I'm funny!
Raven: Statistically, I suppose someone has to.

    • Starfire: Farewell, sister! Although, you did betray and attack me, it was still very nice to see you!

    • Partygoer: Hey, hot alien girl! You digging the scene?
Starfire: I did not know we were supposed to bring shovels.

    • Raven: This party is pointless.
Goth Kid: Everything's pointless. Wanna go talk about it?

    • Beast Boy: Told you we'd win you a prize.
Raven: A giant chicken. I must be the luckiest girl in the world.

    • Starfire: Friends, I invite you to join me in the togetherness of a stay-home movie night. I bring you popcorn and non-cotton candies. Tell me, what sort of movie shall we view?
      Robin: Action.
      Beast Boy: Comedy.
      Cyborg: Sci-fi.
      Raven: Horror.
      (Starfire's reaction is priceless)
      Starfire: Perhaps a double feature?

    • Starfire: Come, friends! I shall thank you for my rescue by reciting the Poem of Gratitude. All six thousand verses!
(The camera zooms in on the other Titans, who are completely dumbfounded)

  • NOTES (31)

  • ALLUSIONS (4)

    • FLCL
When Blackfire is teaching Robin some combat moves, and she throws him, it is similar to in FLCL episode 1, when Haruko hits Naota with her bass for the first time.

    • Starfire: On my planet, such explosions would mean the Gordanians are attacking.
Starfire mentions the Gordanians, which are the mortal enemies of the Thanagarians. They are mentioned in the Justice League episodes, "Starcrossed." Later on, they appear in the Teen Titans prequel, "Go!."

    • Raven: Gem
To complete the topic of Raven's gem and it's relation with the chakras, I must add that frequently the state of these energy points is powered using gems; so it makes a lot of sense that Raven enhances her forehead chakra with a gem, specifically a ruby (the intense red color and the fact that this gem is well known for those purposes in India allow no doubt); the ruby is supposed to be the most powerful gem to bring mind peace and inner harmony. Just what Raven needs.

    • Blackfire: (To Raven) I love that gem... in your chakra...
      Raven: You know about chakras?
In the oriental yoga tradition, chakras are energy centers inside the human aura that's supposed to absorb, transform, and distribute the universal energy (called "prana" in India, "chi" in China, and "ki" in Japan) inside every living being. There are seven main chakras in the human body, located along the v.column and starting from it's base. The first one is at the coxis, and the seventh one is at the top of the head; after this, and going down, the sixth one is that on the forehead (between the eyebrows) in which Raven has her gem. The other chakras are located at the genital zone, the solar plexus, the heart, and the middle of the neck. To handle the energy, you have to move it through the chakras from bottom to top (this is called "awake the Kundalini" --> the "coiled snake"), if you have success doing this (mostly by practicing yoga), it's supposed that you will reach mystical enlightment, meant to be a total state of self control, calm and inner peace; but if you don't awake the Kundalini in the right way, the process only will drive you to the point of madness. Just for the quote, "chakra" means "wheel" in reference to the "fact" that, when they're seen through clarivident sight, they seem to rotate.
