  • Another Great Raven Episode.

So,the episode was good, not a perfect 10,but very close. What Beastboy said to Raven was cruel and sad.I could feel and see how hurt Raven was. This episode marks the invention of the new official Titans game:Stannkball.I hate that game the titans play (mainly BB and CY). Raven almost eating/killing the Titans,Cardiac, and the little girl was funny as hell!It was also scary and showed wat coluld happen if Raven looses it. I honestly felt for Raven when Malchior betrayed her. I could tell she felt hurt and confused and sad. BB's apology felt sincere and the hug between Rae and BB was hot! Well,a good Raven episode that really showed Raven feelings and emotions.moreless

  • It was a nice storyline with a nice villain but it could've been much more of everything.

    "Great"
This was one of Raven's weaker spotlight episodes. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't spectacular. It could've been much better.

Let's start off with Raven's powers:
It's known that Raven is the daughter of a woman named Arella and an demon named Trigon. And Trigon has been referenced as a representation of the Devil and in the comics he called himself the Devil. Now witchcraft and Satan have always been connected. So it makes sense that Raven has the potential for sorcery just as she has the potential to become a female version of her father.

Raven's sorcerous potential has been implied way back in the Wolfman-Perez days where Raven was called the witch, her powers were mystical and she wore a dress. But the series took it another step when she began saying "Azarath, metrion, zinthos," to focus her powers and having all sorts of spellbooks.

So under Malchior's tutelage, she is able to actually fly, not just levitate, move things without her trademark dark energy, force Beast Boy to morph into a rat, create green flames, produce energy constructs not of her dark energy, and call down lightning bolts. Her original powers also increase where they are now influenced by black magic making them more volatile. Like when she almost ate Cardiac, the little girl and the rest of the team.

I like how the creators did this to connect her spotlight episodes in the first and second seasons to her storyline with Trigon in the fourth season.

    Now for Raven's character:
People who are introverted and reclusive are usually misunderstood as creepy. And they tend to open themselves up too easy and grab hold to affection. So being betrayed or used and the like hurts even more. This is what happened to Raven.

She hides it well but Raven does care about what people think about her. It was a pivotal episode for Raven.

As for everything else, I found it funny when Raven kept getting interrupted in reading the story of Rorek and Malchior and how the battle would pause, shut off or the film would get flung around. The game of stankball, Raven's referee cloak and Starfire's discovery of "hair ornaments" were the icing on the cake.

Beast Boy showed his more serious side and the romance between him and Raven is suggested more seriously. I love to see Beast Boy like this.

One of my dislikes about this episode was the battle between Malchior and the Teen Titans. It could've been much more dynamics. I could've imagined him tearing up the city and I wanted to see more of Raven's spell-casting abilities in action. It could've been better. Since the episode is called Spellbound, I just wanted to see more spells.moreless

Raven has always been lonely at the Tower, despite the others. Once Raven starts reading a book and the other Titans continually interrupts her. Raven just want someone to understand what she is going through. Raven then discovers a young magician trapped inside her book. She befriends Malchior and begins to help him by trying to get free from the book. Malchior teaches Raven some new and advanced spells. When she tries out one of the spells on her own she cant control it and almost hurts a kid. Raven then knows that Malchior has been teaching her dark magic. After Raven releases Malchior she realizes that Malchior was not the magician but the dragon. Raven than fights Malchior and seals him back inside of the book. Beast Boy tells her that she is creepy but doesnt have to always be alone. Raven than hugs Beast Boy and decides to have fun with Cyborg and Beast Boy.moreless

  • Raven's dark ways return when she reads a book, makes a friend and get this, she tells nobody about it.

I love Raven's dark episodes. It just somehow brings the gothic part of me out. Well, Raven often thinks she is very smart and powerful, but in reality, she is kinda gullible and lonely, is she not? Well, this episode is one of the very best Raven ones and the nicest in the series. It is easy to understand yet contains mature content. It is playful and fun, yet sinister and dangerous. The stankball contrast to Raven's deep, dark secret makes this episode as its name suggests, spell-binding. I have never seen a more revealing episode of BBxRae in my life.moreless

    • Continually whenever Raven is talking to Malchior in the book, the amount of Malchior's face shown changes as does the size of his eyelash depending on the camera angles. Edit
    • If the spell Ecrinom Hezbarek Mortix was dark magic, why did Rorek (the wizard) use it against the dragon when it was mentioned in the book? Edit
    • Wouldn't Raven have destroyed the book that held the once-more imprisoned Malchior rather than risk him coming back to haunt her? This would have done a lot of good, considering Malchior would return to work for the Brotherhood of Evil in "Homecoming (2)" and "Titans Together." Edit

Robin: Raven! Careful! The girl! Beast Boy: Raven! STOP! Raven: I... can't... Robin: Hang on. Beast Boy: What is wrong with you? Edit
    • Beast Boy: Hey, Raven! Um... it's like almost noon and you haven't come out of your room. So, just in case you're mad, I'm gonna go ahead and say… sorry I called you creepy last night. Raven? Malchior: (Muffled) Perhaps if we're quiet he'll just go away. (Raven laughs) Beast Boy: Um… Raven? Is everything... (Raven opens the door) Beast Boy: Hi, um... you were... laughing. And I thought I heard... is there someone in there? Raven: Just me, and a really good book. Beast Boy: Oh. So, I just wanted to make sure you were okay? Raven: Better than okay. Way better. • Allusions

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Malchior: Book Malchior emerging from the book after a powerful spell has been placed on him bears a strong resemblance to Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. Tom Marvolo Riddle, alias Lord Voldemort, tries to convince Ginny to free him from the book. She tells him all about her life and he feeds on these pieces of information, growing stronger as the girl confides more of her soul into him. In the end, Harry destroys the book by attacking the book itself rather than the person. This is parallel to the plot in Spellbound, where Raven confides more of herself to Malchior and he grows stronger as a result. Malchior was also temporarily "destroyed" after she cursed the book and Malchior was "destroyed", at least conquered. In both cases, a person seeking revenge came out of the book. There is also a similarity in how Ginny tried to tell Harry and Ron about the book and was stopped by Percy. Raven was about to tell the Titans about Malchior when the alarm interrupted her. Malchior and Tom Marvolo Riddle, the antagonists, were guys. Raven and Ginny Weasly, the protagonists, were girls. Both antagonists played on their weak spots, which was others not accepting them and how they never fit in. Edit
    • Raven: You taught me spells, but I just learned a curse. In William Shakespeare's play, The Tempest, Prospero, a powerful magician, demands gratitude of his slave, Caliban, for teaching him how to speak. Caliban replies: "You taught me language, and my profit on't is, I know how to curse." Later on, Caliban tries to defeat Prospero, but fails. Edit
    • White Raven: Wiccan Circle
When Raven was doing the first spell, she made a circle with candles and incense. When Wiccans do spells or just want to do a ritual, they draw circles and use the four elements. Salt = earth, water = water, incense = air, candles = fire. Raven used all those elements in her spell. Edit
