  • Despite feeling weirded out by the sudden departure from animation style from the TV Series, a strong storyline, good character development and intriguing twists has proven this to be an excellent movie.moreless

    9.0
As the movie began, there is one thing that is very obvious - the animation style has been changed from the TV and the previous movie! Barring that aside as a minor annoyance, I watched the movie (being a big Tenchi fan that I am) and found myself highly rewarded. The movie is mostly focused on the relationships around the girls of Tenchi and a love that refuses to die from before Tenchi was ever born. As Ryoko and Ayeka searches all over Japan for Tenchi, the relationships between the two of them and Tenchi are both explored and tested. While this is happening, the relationship between Tenchi and Haruna is is developed and in the proccess, the past that once existed between her and Yosho slowly unravels for us to see. As the movie progresses, it asks us a question - is it better to let go of a painfull past, is it something that is worth keeping even throught he pain of holding it in, or is it something that we need to become a better developed person? In the end, both letting go and treasuring it both has its merits and in the final moments of the movie, we see the characters that we have come to know and love grow up even more as Tenchi seems ready to make a choice and Ayeka and Ryoko are willing to accept his choice.moreless

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Kazuhito's wife Itsuki looks exactly like Tenchi's mother Kiyone from the OVA series.

    • Confusion?
Kasuhito claims that his real wife was Itsuki after Haruna died, and that Itsuki's daughter Achika was Tenchi's mother. However, in the Ryo-Ohki OVA, Kasuhito married Airi, and Tenchi had a mother named Kiyone, who was not related to Kasuhito at all.

  • QUOTES (10)

    • Ryoko: What are you so cheery about all of a sudden Princess?
Ayeka: Nothing, I'm just simply back to my naturally optimistic self. Who knows, Lord Tenchi could drop by this very restaurant, anything's possible you know.
Ryoko: Fine. Enjoy your work Miss Bright Eyes, but remember, you're still at minimum wage.

    • (Just before Yosho and Haruna disappear)
Haruna: Remember this Tenchi...(Shows the sketch Tenchi drew of her) I will always treasure it.
Tenchi: I want you to know that, I'll never forget you Haruna.
Haruna: Yes you will. You must. Let the feeling slip away, 'til there's nothing left but a warm feeling in your heart.

    • Mihoshi: Isn't Washu amazing? A fake Science Academy ID card- who'd ever know it was phoney? [Mihoshi laughs, attracting everyone's attention.]
      Kiyone: Mihoshi, quiet! Shhhh!
Mihoshi: What, did you say something, Kiyone?

    • Katsuhito: As the opening of spring/makes this old man's heart sing/ I feel the beauty of the hours/ as the camellia blooming flower/ floats by on gossamer wings.

    • Tenchi: I love you so much that I've made you my whole world, but now…I don't think that I can keep loving you like this, Haruna- it hurts too much.

    • Mihoshi: Is it my fault I get lost? They always make the directions so complicated- left, right and all that.

    • Haruna: Look at me, keep your eyes on me, and never leave my side.

    • Ayeka: You are the one who told me to believe in Tenchi, remember? You said to never give up.
Ryoko: Look, Ayeka, you can go if you want.
Ayeka: I wish I could be the one, of course. But you are the only one who can reach him, Ryoko, you know that.

    • Haruna: Just think of what our lives would have been like on that shimmering planet, time slipping away as one sweet day flowed into another.

    • Haruna: How do you know what is real? I hold him in my arms and feel his warmth, and he feels mine. There's nothing more real than that.

  • NOTES (5)

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Final scene: The final moments of the movie is just like the scene between Achika and Noboyuki in the first Tenchi movie. Instead of Noboyuki drawing at the hill by himself, it is Tenchi with Ryoko looking for him instead of Achika - a possible hint that Tenchi will end up with Ryoko like Noboyuki and Achika did.
