Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Season 2 Episode 22

Born to Run

Aired Monday 9:00 PM Apr 10, 2009 on FOX

  • Trivia

    • The show's ending was meant to lead straight into the new movie, Terminator: Salvation, starring Christian Bale as John Connor, which was released just weeks after the TV series ended.

    • Nitpick: Auldridge refers to Catherine Weaver as a "citizen of Scotland." As Scotland is a constituent country of the United Kingdom, rather than a sovereign nation, natives of Scotland are legally British citizens.

    • Goof: Cameron tells John that Sarah has lost 11% of her weight and speculates that this is the result of her developing breast cancer. But weight loss is only associated with advanced breast cancer that has metastasized (spread to other parts of the body). If her cancer had been that advanced she would have had noticeable lumps in her breasts and likely elsewhere. Her slim physique and frequent self examinations would never have allowed her to miss the cancer in its earlier stages before weight loss could be an expected symptom.

    • Goof: Cameron's eye glows red, but in the series' pilot at the Dyson's residence it is shown that her eyes glow blue. It is debatable as to whether or not this is a goof, however. In early promo materials her endo-skull was shown with red eyes as well, despite more than one use of the blue eye effect she used throughout Season One to prove she was a Terminator. She also had a full color HUD unlike other Terminators in the franchise whose eye-color matched their HUD color, so it is possible she could change eye-color for different uses, though this issue was never explored on-screen. It's also worth noting that this is the only episode where her endo-eye is actually exposed.

  • Quotes

    • Auldridge: Ten years ago you murdered one Miles Dyson, employee of Cyberdyne. Long time gone, but the man's still dead, so we've got that. Eight years ago, you and your son and a high school friend of his blow up a bank vault and die in the explosion. Now, of course, you're still alive, which is inconvenient for many, but the bank's still blown, so we've got that. More recently, and by that I mean Monday, you participated in a firefight leaving five dead and kidnapping one Savannah Weaver, daughter of Catherine Weaver and citizen of Scotland, making this incident both federal and international. Two of the dead were off-duty law enforcement officers, and that usually gets you the needle, but in that, I do digress.
      : Agent Auldridge?
      Auldridge: Yeah.
      Sarah: You're a funny boy.
Auldridge: Well, that's what Mom says.
Sarah: I never liked funny boys.
Auldridge: I doubt they like you either, Ms. Connor. So there's two ways I can bring your son into custody - with your help, or dead. Which do you think it should be?

    • John: I need a computer. I need to do research.
Cameron: You want the blueprints for the Los Angeles County Jail.
      John: Do I?
Cameron: So you can plan how to get your mother out. But I'm not going to let you do that, you should know that by now.
John: I do know that by now.
Cameron: Then what is there to research?
John: Power sources, shielded nuclear power sources.
      Cameron: Like mine?
      John: Just like yours.
      Cameron: Why?
John: I wanna know if being around them all the time can give you cancer.

    • (John Henry and Murch are playing a "monster" dice-based game)
      Weaver: Who's winning, Mr. Murch?
Murch: Well, it's not really that kind of game - although I'm a little bummed that he killed the Umber Hulk so fast.
Weaver: I'm sure you've considered the possibility he can roll whatever number he desires.

    • Murch: John Henry was hacked, we-we fixed that - and besides, I-I think we're past the point where moving the hardware's a good idea. In fact, I think it's … potentially a really bad idea.
      Weaver: Oh? How's that so?
Murch: For example, the other day, one of the fan wires on the server was … glitchy, uh, so we switched it out. Same wire, same length, identical - like, uh, changing a spark plug.
      Weaver: And?
Murch: It sort of … tweaked him.
Weaver: I'm not sure what you're getting at.
Murch: What I'm getting at is I think what we know to be John Henry only exists as this specific collection of hardware and software … body and soul.
Weaver: We change a wire, we change John Henry.
      Murch: Yes.

    • Ellison: You can tell 'em. You can tell 'em everything you've been doing. You could draw 'em a picture of everything they know and everything you know. If you're innocent, you could do that.
Sarah: Last time I drew a picture, I ended up in a psych ward.
Ellison: Maybe things will be different now. Maybe … you got nothin' to lose.
Sarah: There's always something to lose.

    • Sarah: Do you believe in the devil, father?
      Father Bonilla: The devil.
Sarah: Do you believe in the actual devil?
Father Bonilla: Something opposes God. Something tempts man into sin.
Sarah: I don't know about God or Heaven … but I do believe that someone or something wants this world to burn - the devil, demons … I believe. And that day in the church, my daughter … you saw things, didn't you?
Father Bonilla: I pray … every day to understand … what happened that day.
Sarah: I can explain it to you. I don't know if you'll believe me, but I can explain it to you. And after I'm done, I'm going to ask you to do something for me. Will you do something for me?

    • Weaver: John Henry monitors all law enforcement channels. Seems prudent.
      Ellison: It seems illegal.
Weaver: So's lying to the FBI. I don't think now's the time to be parsing which laws we'll be obeying and which we will not.
John Henry: Now's not the time
Ellison: I heard her when she said it.

    • Ellison: It's a bad idea. I don't know what you think John knows.
Weaver: I know he was at my house when the attacker showed up. I want to know why. His mother thinks he's a messiah. I want to know why. And despite your reluctance to tell me, I surmise that he and his cyber companion are connected to the John Henry body, and I want to know why. Yes. She's a cyborg. Don't pretend you didn't know.
      Ellison: She's dangerous.
Weaver: And you think I need protecting. That's sweet. But don't ever lie to me again. Now … about John Connor.

    • Cameron: If my power source was leaking radiation, I would know. I have sensors for that.
      John: Where are they?
      Cameron: You can't see them.
John: (scoffs) No, of course not. So I just have to trust you on it. But stuff does go wrong with you, doesn't it? Stuff breaks … you kill birds, you twitch … you try to murder me. You're not perfect. You're a machine.

    • (John searches the ID's in vain)
Chola: There's nothin' else there. There's nothin' hidden there. No secret message there for her escape. I am to tell you this, from your mother : Leave this place, as soon as it is safe, leave this place. Do not think of her. Do not come for her. Leave. (to Cameron) You are to make sure that he does. (to John) We lose everybody we love.
      John: She said that?
      Chola: No.

    • Ellison: Let me repeat. I had nothing to do with your mother's arrest. If I had … there'd be a SWAT team outside your door right now.
John: And the same thing would happen to this SWAT team as happened to your last one.
Ellison: Catherine Weaver would like to meet you.
      John: Why?
Ellison: She wants to thank you for saving Savannah.
      John: Well, she just did.
Ellison: Your mother wanted to meet her.
John: Well, when my mother gets out, trust me, she will.
Ellison: I told Ms. Weaver you'd never come without your mom. She said, if that was the case, I'm supposed to ask one question. She says I'm supposed to ask you (to Cameron) : Will you join us? She says she hopes you'll know what that means.
John: Do you know what that means?
Cameron: No, I don't. Please leave now, Mr. Ellison. I think you've said enough.
      Ellison: John …
Cameron: You've said enough, Mr. Ellison. I won't ask you again.

    • Cameron: He upset you.
John: Me? I think he upset you.
      Cameron: You know that's impossible.
      John: Is it?
Cameron: You said it yourself, John, I'm just a machine.

    • Auldridge: I believe you.
      Sarah: You believe me what?
Auldridge: I believe there are machines. I believe they've come back from the future to first kill you and then your son. I believe in time travel. I believe in cyborgs. I believe there's a world that I've not yet seen but you have … and John. In the last eight hours, I've received 37 calls from people who have met a young man named John Baum or his sister Cameron or Sarah Baum, the mother. They now know her to be Sarah Connor. By all accounts, your son looks 16 and not 24, just as you look 35 and not 43. I believe you have participated in the miraculous and the terrible, and through it all you have maintained a moral and good soul. I want to help you. I want to help your son. Help me do that.
      Sarah: My son is dead.

    • (John awakens to find Cameron sitting on the bed watching him)
John: Don't do that. My mom used to do that. I really hate that. What's goin' on?
Cameron: You need to understand how it works.
      John: What?
Cameron: This chip. This body. The software is designed to terminate humans. The hardware is designed to terminate humans. That's our sole function.
      John: Not you.
Cameron: No. Not anymore. But what was there is still there - and will always be there.
John: So down deep … you wanna kill me.
      Cameron: Yes, I do.
      John: Then why don't you?
      Cameron: I might someday.

    • Sarah: Why are you here?
Father Bonilla: They have a message for you. She's coming. (the alarm begins to sound) I don't know what to do.
      Sarah: You're a priest, pray.

    • Sarah: I sent you a message. I told you …
John: Yeah, bad John Connor. Ground me. (to a badly wounded Cameron) Are you okay?
      Cameron: (distorted) I'm not 100%.
Sarah: How far from a hundred per cent are you?
      John: Why?
Sarah: 'Cause I need to meet Catherine Weaver, and she (indicating Cameron) needs to destroy whatever's in that basement.

    • John: I really wish we weren't here right now.
Sarah: Savannah could tell them we know about Cromartie.
      John: John Henry now.
      Sarah: Metal.

    • Ellison: Where's Cameron?
      Sarah: In the car.
      Ellison: Expecting trouble?
Sarah: No change for the meter.
Ellison: You're not armed, are you?
      Sarah: Expecting trouble?
      Ellison: No reason for that
      Sarah: No reason at all.

    • John Henry: Hello.
      Cameron: Hello.
      John Henry: I know you.
      Cameron: And I know you.
John Henry: Will you join us?

    • Weaver: We have a common enemy … one we cannot fight with conventional weapons or by conventional means.
Sarah: Kaliba? Don't presume to know Kaliba.
Weaver: I'm sorry. I wasn't speaking to you. (to John) I was speaking to you … about Skynet. Savannah's told you about John Henry, I assume - which is why your cyborg is skulking around my basement.
      Ellison: What the hell …
Weaver: Get down! (Weaver forms a shield as something crashes through the window and explodes) Run!

    • Weaver: The basement. Mr. Ellison. John Henry.
Sarah: We need to get out. They're trying to kill my son.
Weaver: No, they're trying to kill my son, just like you are.
Sarah: I'm sure she's done it.
Weaver: You better hope not. Your John may save the world, but he can't do it without mine.

    • John: Her chip. It's gone. Well, where is he, the - the - the … John Henry? He took her chip, where did he go?
Weaver: He didn't take the chip, she gave it to him.
      Sarah: John.
(John turns to see "I'm Sorry John" scrolling endlessly on the display)
      John: Where is he?
      Weaver: Not where, when.
Ellison: What? What do you mean when?
Sarah: I know that. I've seen it before.
John: Is that the Turk? It's Andy Goode's Turk.
Sarah: Three dots. You lying Terminator bitch! You're building Skynet.
Weaver: No. I was building something to fight it. And I'd watch who's calling who a bitch.

    • John: Derek.
      Derek: Yeah?
      John: John. J-John Connor.
Derek: I know a lot of people, kid. Don't know you. Anybody heard the name John Connor? (exhales) Well … You know what? I think you're gonna be famous. My brother's back, and you're wearing his coat.

  • Allusions

    • Sarah: (to Father Bonilla when Cameron comes to free Sarah from prison) Gird thyself.

The story of Peter being rescued from prison by an angel is told in the Bible's New Testament book Acts 12:8. After the angel causes the fetters to fall away from the apostle, he tells Peter to "Gird thyself", or get himself ready so that the angel can lead him safely from prison.

    • John Henry: I attack the Umber Hulk. (rolls dice) 20.
Murch: Wow. Okay, that's … crit with the Vorpal long sword to the Umber Hulk. Unbelievable. Lucky roll.

The "Vorpal sword" is originally found in Lewis Carroll's Through The Looking Glass (1871). In Jabberwocky, a poem read by Alice, a young boy wields a Vorpal sword while fighting the Jabberwocky. Today, primarily based on Dungeons & Dragons, many role-playing and computer games have "vorpal sword" weapons in them.
