AIRED:

This show marks Milton Berle's "official" start as host of Texaco Star Theater, having been given the job earlier in the summer. His guests include big band singer Evelyn Knight, vaudeville comedy team Smith and Dale, roller skating act Four Carters, vaudevillians Park and Clifford, and Phil Silvers. Silvers teaches Berle how to sing, Smith and Dale perform their restaurant routine with Berle as the waiter, and Milton turns Sid Stone's Texaco pitch into a Chinese comedy bit.

      • The review in the Weekly Variety of 9/29/1948 raves that Berle "tied the 60 minutes into a package so tight there wasn't room for even an extra giggle on top of the deep belly laughs he pyramided, with the acts as a springboard for his foolery."  The reviewer also deemed the episode "unquestionably one of the finest video programs yet."

      • The weekly budget during the first year of the series was only $15,000 per show; that includes Berle, the band, guests, sets, writers--everything. Berle's paycheck from that budget is $1,500 per week.
