I agree. Especially after season 5. I'm just watching season 6 now and he seems a bit pointless in this season.
FOX (ended 2006)
Oh, for cryin' out loud people! Now I know this topic's been put to sleep for almost a full year now, but I can't let it go on without posting my opinion. And, representing a very small minority here, I think the least useful character on the show is Kelso.
C'mon people, won't anybody admit that Kutcher's bit on That 70's Show is way overrated, although I think Ashton, still, is that good and is not the real problem here. No, I rather tend to think that the problem comes from the intellectual narrowness of the role of Michael Kelso, especially for an actor like A.K., while the character gets so much screen time and has such importance in the plot. Don't get me wrong, I too do like Ashton. But his TV alter ego is too damned stupid. Kutcher didn't deserve that. And I take offence at people talking only about That 70's Show as Ashton Kutcher's debut sitcom. Both Ashton and That 70's Show ought to be remembered for better things.
And some say that Jackie is not essential because Mila Kunis had Family Guy on the side. Well then, Ashton was definitely not lost without That 70's show either. But this argument is pointless and stupid because That 70's Show is what launched both these actor's careers. And if I had in my hands the power to only compromise one of these two careers... Well, first I believe Ashton would've made it big anyway, and he'd have gotten an even better career-launcher than the role of Kelso. And second, mmm, how to say this..., Mila Kunis is so hot and cute, and her personal story is so worth taking interest in her, and she so speaks russian, and That 70's Show so needed a much younger addition to the cast, to balance Danny Masterson being much older than the rest of the gang...
But coming back to Kelso, this character is mostly annoyingly stupid. Stupid to the point of unrealistic I'd add. Just like Reese in Malcolm In The Middle (That 70's Show's natural twin). There are special needs classes and homes for such retards. They can't possibly be leading a "normal" social life! And besides, even after over 7 seasons with this character I still can't pinpoint one single great Michael Kelso moment, not one memorable quote, nothing beyond some entertaining burns and the ritual, enthusiastic, "burn" cry that goes with them.
Whereas Fez' existence is justified. Around the obvious nucleus of characters of the show (4 american teenagers in the late 70's, 2 boys, 2 girls, getting close soon or late to form 2 unanimously appreciated/favored couples - Eric + Donna ; Hyde + Jackie ), there's always room for the little foreign guy (coz' there's never a teen comedy without a foreign exchange student) and his outsider's look on things and cultural specificities of 1970's America. Fez is an ambassador for all the viewers of this show who weren't born in the 70's and don't get it all about this decade. But I agree on one point, he is a secondary character. He should rather have been a recurring second role, like the parents, Laurie or Leo, a character the gang always comes across when at school or out havin' fun. Tell me any of you would gladly throw away disco-fever Fez, or love-starved, sex-desperate, "whore-hunting" Fez? I personally wouldn't, and Wilmer Valderrama is to be warmly saluted for that. One talented and way underrated actor and role, by all means!
Meanwhile, Kelso didn't deserve any more screen time than big Rhonda, crazy Caroline, or any of the kids who lasted about 1-2 seasons. He should've been the first of these kids to appear and then disappear, and he should now be remembered as the early, pre-Hyde era boyfriend of then puerile Jackie, a meaningless jock who'd have been written off around season 3. Around time when Jackie's interest for extremely opposite Hyde started to grow...
But I'll stop right there, just before my post turns to fanfic.
|Say that it's 1998 and you are the creator of That '70s Show and That '70s Show has never aired yet. Fox comes up to you and says that the cast is good but one of the six (Eric, Donna, Kelso, Hyde, Fez and Jackie) must be taken off the show. Who would you take off? |
**THIS MEANS THAT ONE OF THEM WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ON THE SHOW**
(I TOLD YOU THIS IS PROBABLY THE HARDEST THAT '70S SHOW QUESTION EVER)
