While Eric Forman is swiping beer for his best friends Donna Pinciotti, Michael Kelso, and Steven Hyde, his parents Red and Kitty hint that he may be getting the old Vista Cruiser. Now Eric can drive all of his friends including the new foreign exchange student, Fez to a Todd Rundgren concert in Milwaukee. A minor snag occurs when Kelsos obnoxious girlfriend Jackie Burkhart finds out and invites herself along. An even bigger snag occurs when Red tells Eric that he cant drive the car out of Point Place.moreless
This is the only episode in which Eric calls Red "Pop." In every other episode he calls him "Dad" (or "Sir.")
The music used in this episode was:
Love Will Keep Us Together (1975) by Captain & Tennille;
Jackie Blue (1974) by Ozark Mountain Daredevils;
Space Truckin' (1972) by Deep Purple;
I Saw the Light (1972) by Todd Rundgren;
Hello It's Me (1972) by Todd Rundgren.
Donna calls Eric a "17-year-old man" even though he turns 17 in the next episode.
Response: This is a casual remark. It's said only days before Eric turns 17 and it's not strange for a person to refer to their age rounded up when your birthday is within a few days or weeks.
In the scene where Eric steals two beers from the bar in front of Red, when Eric talks about getting the cruiser, he holds up two cans of beer: one is upside down and the other is not. In the next cut both are upside down. Note also that the people in the background changes between the cuts.
Kitty: Well, the kids are off. I wonder where they went.
Red: Out of town.
Kitty: How do you know?
Red: I told them not to.
Eric: If my dad catches me copping beers he'll kill me.
Hyde: I'm willing to take that risk.
Red: If I find one beer can in that car, it's over!
Kitty: And no donuts either! Ants!
Donna: Oh, have I told you how incredibly attractive you are Eric?
Kelso: You told me he was cute.
Donna: No I didn't.
Kelso: I remember, 'cause you said not to say anything in front of Eric.
(Eric's car battery is dead)
Randy (The Mechanic): So, what, you want a battery? 'Cause I can get you a battery.
Eric: Are they cheap, or possibly free?
Randy (The Mechanic): Thirty-two bucks, minimum.
Kelso: Alright, I'll tell you what. We'll trade you our battery plus five bucks for one of your batteries.
Fez: I might not say this right because I am new to English, but she has tremendous breasts, yes?
Kelso: What happened to your dad's hair?
Donna: He got a permanent.
Kelso: So that's permanent?
Bob: Red, a Toyota?
Red: Yeah, it's mine. I tell you the last time I was that close to a Japanese machine, it was shooting at me.
Donna: I think Canada closes at 9:30.
Kelso: Jackie's good for gas money.
Eric: You are such a whore.
Fez: When does the boat get here, whore?
Eric: Ever since yesterday, I can't stop thinking about you. I mean, I've known you practically my whole life. I want you. I want you so bad.
Donna: Eric, it's a car.
Kelso: Let's just leave these two kids alone.
Kelso: Don't worry about it! Just remain calm, keep moving.
Donna: And above all, don't get sucked into my dad's hair.
Hyde: In ten minutes, there will be no more beer opportunities.
Donna: Eric, relax. We've lived next door to each other forever. You could've had me when I was four.
Eric: Really? And there I was all day long on the hippity hop.
Fez: I, too, must go to the bathroom. Eric?
Eric: No, it doesn't work that way with guys.
Kelso: That's Fez. He's a foreign exchange student.
Jackie: Who did we exchange for him?
Meg Liberman and Marc Hirschfeld were nominated for an Artios Award (given by the Casting Society of America, USA) for "Best Casting for TV, Comedy Pilot" for this episode.
Mila Kunis actually embellished her age at her audition, claiming that she would be 18 on her birthday, but did not specify how many birthdays away that was; she was fourteen at the time. According to the interview, the producers were very surprised when she told them she would need a set teacher because she was underage.
This is the only episode not directed by David Trainer. It is most likely due to the fact that when networks give shows the green light to film a pilot, they are not sure which directors they will have for the bulk of the season if the show is picked up. Therefore, this might explain why Terry Hughes directed only the pilot before they found their permanent director, David Trainer.
There used to be a studio musician who worked for the jazz-rock duo Steely Dan named Jackie Kelso and they wrote a song called "The Fez." Coincidence?
The working titles for the show included Feelin' All Right, The Kids Are Alright, Reeling in the Years and Teenage Wasteland.
After the opening credits, the gang is watching The Brady Bunch on TV. The Brady Bunch was a weekly half-hour show which originally ran from 1969 to 1974, and then was syndicated.
Kelso (referring to Todd Rundgren): He's no Frampton.
This refers to Peter Frampton, whose album "Frampton Comes Alive" was huge in 1976.
