  • Light-hearted and whimsical, a text-book example of the popular series.

Ann decides that door-to-door shoe sales is the perfect way to make money.

A classic first season episode that showcases the best and worst of the program. Marlo Thomas is engaging, if trapped in the overly cute mode demanded by the program - here she is particularly effective trying to convince Don to invest in the deposit she needs to start her sales career. The script is very good, despite being 1,001 shoe jokes, some are very clever. Paul Lynde is his classic self, though the idea that the character bought footwear from a funeral supply house is a little macabre. Surprisingly, he's written as basically honest, offering to make good on the defective shoes he's given Ann to sell.

What dates the program is its reliance on style over depth. Ann may be charming dashing about in a green dress and white pumps - from Don's office, to the UN Building, and finally to a hotel - but aside from being a single girl, the viewer really gets no sense of her real goals. She says she wants to be an actress (though it's hard to know if she'd rather be on Broadway or married) and a "modern woman" but the real thrust here is simply to make sure that she contacts her boyfriend before his shoes begin to fall apart. The situation comedy is more about the window dressing than really interesting situations.moreless
