A The 100 Community
Thursday 9:00 PM on The CW (Returning 2017)
You guys, I’ve never read the reviewer’s rule book (can’t risk the paper cuts), but I’m almost certain it states that you can’t like every episode of the show you’re reviewing. Every once in a while you have to say it’s “too slow”, or “doesn’t make sense”, or it “spent an entire season on a farm with not enough zombies”. Basically what I’m saying is that I’m very sorry I’m such a terrible reviewer because THIS EPISODE WAS AWESOME.

Everything I have thus far complained about (memory loss, character slides, preposterously super-human recoveries, etc) were eradicated in this hour of delightful, violent teen adventure.

There was something for everyone! We were graced with the comedy stylings of Monty and Jasper (heart you guys!), the horrific violence of attempted murder, emotional character development, plot forwarding, intrigue, and someone’s lips touched another person’s lips!

I am very content, you guys, very content. Let’s pop a few radiation-soaked nuts into our mouths and get this party started!

darepng

Miller got all up in Dave’s face, and Dave headbutted him!

embarassingpng

Haha, Bellamy did NOTHING. He sat there shaking his head like Dave just told an off-colour joke or something. Was Miller okay? Don’t ask Bellamy, because he didn’t check.

Meanwhile, Clark was talking to the council. Was I caught in a hurricane last week and missed when the 100 acquired a monitor and two headsets? Did Raven also build these with the toy car they found? Or maybe the arc sent them a care package.

glamourpng

The council told Clarke that there was a bunker of super useful supplies that I guess slipped their mind when they sent The 100 to their probable doom.

Then Ruberonious asked for some alone time with his dead best pal’s daughter.

dramaticpng

I half expected Clarke to hike her thumb at the camera and say “this guy, ammiright?” I mean, Nitteronious is the one who had her dad killed! The. Nerve.

Then Clark got Dax (don’t say “who?” like you don’t know who he is… it’s Dax! You know… the guy who… um… Dax!) But it wasn’t Dax’s sweet mother on the line (who used to sing to him every night, remember when he told that story by the campfire?), it was the nefarious guard!

solidpng

murderpng

He asked our beloved Dax to murder Bellamy! This was the first time it really dawned on me that some of these kids are legit dangerous criminals. I wonder what the Beautiful Creepster did to wind up in the clink (miss you!).

Meanwhile, Bellamy was still in a fight with Octavia.

roompng

He basically said she should forgive him because he DIDN’T murder Dave. I hope I never have to use the argument “well, I didn’t murder him!” to get out of a fight with one of my siblings. But to be honest, fair enough, Bellamy! I totally thought you were gonna!

Anyway, then a hot slice of protagonist came to enlist him on a mission.

Then all of our hearts grew three sizes because look who was back!

firstpng

They have a unique way to high-five, which as we’ve learned from Community, makes any character instantly win all the adorable awards ever created (there are a surprising amount).

Then we got a scene where Clarke redressed Finn’s wounds and Raven displayed jealous hurt feelings like they were on sale.

storylinepng

I suffered an eye-roll related injury during this scene. My face will never be the same.

Then Octavia, being the tricksy minx she is, snuck up to see Dave. They shared some banter, and then she offered to “clean him up a bit”. Haha, Octavia, you ain’t foolin’ nobody!

abspng

I guess his name is actually Lincoln, but I saw in his eyes that he identifies more with the name Dave. Like, he is Dave IN HIS SOUL.Anyway, then Octavia totally mean-girled Raven, who was all, “nuh uh!” and went straight to Finn for some sexy times.

BETTERpng

Okay you guys, it’s not a secret that I’m not a fan of this love triangle. If I were Raven (a girl can dream!) I would have thrown the water in his face and given him the finger on my way out of his life.

Instead of the show using her forgiveness to keep the love triangle alive, I am choosing to believe The 100 is trying to show the damaging psychological effects of a neglected childhood, and the overpowering need to feel loved when all you’ve known is rejection. Because if that’s NOT what they’re trying to do, the message is essentially “girls are dumb”. Yes, Raven should have bitch-slapped Finn the minute he woke up. Yes, the only time Raven should be taking off her clothes for Finn is to show him what he will now be missing. BUT, her whole life Raven’s mom neglected her, while Finn did not. I can see how in this one case, we can forgive a girl for not realizing her own self-worth and for staying with the only constant she’s ever known. OKAY STOP GIVING ME THAT FACE, I’m done.

Bellamy and Clarke found the bunker, but look who was watching!

voicepng

They didn’t find anything of use in the bunker, UNTIL…

excitedpng

You guys, I realize Bellamy was holding an assault rifle, and the implications of giving guns to teens is dreadful, but the look on his face was downright adorable. There’s no arguing with that smile!

Back at the camp, hilarious things were happening.

prettypng

Monty was having what was known as a “good high”, whilst Jasper was having a “bad high” (very technical terms that I researched through books).

Octavia hilariously gave him an “anti-Grounder stick” and decided to be a total trickster with Miller!

Then the League of Shippers threw a party because Bellamy was teaching Clarke how to shoot a gun.

sexpng

She figured out that Bellamy planned to leave camp and vehemently tried talking him out of it. But he needed some air because his brain was melting. Quick question, did they set up the target as the doorway? That seems smart.

Bellamy got a nice little trip down Guilt Lane where all of his old friends reminded him what a horrible mistake his entire life had been. Basically just a really great, fun time. You guys, this was the first time we saw what is going on inside of Bellamy regarding all the crap he’s done, and it was honestly very well done.

Clarke was also having a super time inside the bunker, where she imagined pointing the gun at herself and then smiled. CREEPY (and awesome).

melted zeuspng

suppng

He wanted her to forgive her mother, which was actually her subconscious wanting her to forgive her mother, and yet she still said no. So… good talk.

Octavia waited until everyone was tripping and then stole some clothes for Dave Lincoln. I REALLY want to know what was going on in the mind of Miller.

She set him loose and they kissed and it was so well done that I totally forgot about the obvious age difference.

Back in the wilderness, Hallucination Ruberonious was giving Bellamy a really aggressive anti-suicide pep talk.

smilepng

But then he turned into Dax! Things were looking pretty grim, until Bellamy’s hottest hallucination of them all:

totallypng

But she wasn’t a hallucination. Clarke saved Bellamy, then Bellamy saved Clarke and they had a nice chat about it beside a fresh corpse.

funpng

In all seriousness, this scene was very moving.

It was, however, overshadowed by the most amazing shot in The 100 history:

Jasper cradling the Anti-Grounder stick made me smile so hard, you guys.

Then Bellamy and Clarke returned with gifts for everybody.

It was the hot new council member! I suppose we should have seen that coming. I was just so happy it wasn’t Kane. Redemption still on track, buddy! Anyway, she killed the nefarious guard to cover her tracks and made it look like a suicide. What a rascal!

You guys, this episode had everything I wanted, and by the looks of next week’s episode, this crazy-train ain’t stopping any time soon. The 100 (like most shows) had its kinks in the beginning, and we’ve had some storylines taper off without explanation (where you at, two headed deer?). But I’m going to firmly state that the show found its footing around episode four and hasn’t stopped sprinting since.

Is the show perfect? Of course not. Is the show fun? Hell yes! Does your heart weep when the screen goes blank and the credits roll because you know this is the furthest away you’ll be to a new episode? Yes. (Or is that just me?)

Some Things:

- Who’s excited for Dichen Lachman joining the show as a grounder? Seriously, if this is what being stranded on a radiation-soaked planet does, then SIGN ME UP because all the Grounders are babes.

- What do you think Tim Bartlett (our favourite dreamboat extra) was hallucinating about?

- Do you think Dave Lincoln is currently making Finn a friendship bracelet? Would you like to see these two shoot hoops? I would.

- Are you excited the teens now have heavy artillery, or are you horrified, or both?

- Do they have peanut butter on the arc?

K, I gotta jet, there’s a mint areo bar calling my name. See you guys next week!!

I'm going through all your photo recaps of The 100 and man, I haven't laughed this hard in ages (does that make me a very sad, lonely person? I don't care!) . This one in particular, had me crying with laughter. I never noticed Tim Bartlett before but now I kinda love him, all because of you.

Anyway, I'm super late to the party here but I just wanted to tell you, you are awesome and these recaps have been the highlight of my week, so thank you.

Lets hope we see more of him and Octivia. Hope this program runs for many seasons. Please keep as laughing and producing reviews like this. Thank you

Ok not gonna lie I might still refer to "Lincoln" as Dave. So excited about Dichen, she is gonna be a badass no doubt. Great Clarabell moments (I still refuse the Bellarke ship name). Next episode here I come.

First of all : love your photo-recap review! I usually don't mind photo recaps very much but this one reminded me of many things I have been wondering myself and then some...Looking forward to your next recap!!!

Second, -Dave- Lincoln is such a babe...I think it's Octavia's real redeeming quality? hahaha!

Third, thank you team of The 100 for making a better teen show than The Vampire Diaries. It's clever, it's not JUST about sleeping around and around and it doesn't run in too many circles (only 10 eps!).

There is not a huge age difference, the actor who plays Lincoln is only four years older than the actress who plays Octavia :D They are such a cute couple, my new OTP &3

At first I was like wtf is Dave? lol... Hysterical...he should be a Dave. And curious who named him Lincoln...is he a leftover human from before the apocalypse... Who named him? Is that thing to name Grounders. Do they call themselves Grounders... or "People of Earth"

And speaking of two headed deer....why doesn't Lincoln have two heads lol

I love this show! A 100 teens high off their balls from radiation nuts? Pure genious. Especially Jasper with the anti-grounder stick. Very adorable. He and Monty are the Troy and Abed of this show.
I really like that Octavia is coming into her own and defying her brother. But I'm a little wierded out by that budding romance between her and Lincoln. Isn't she supposed to be 16 or 17 or something? 'Cause he is clearly closer to 30. Well, can't blame her. Teen hormones and those abs do make for an explosive combination.
I'm also loving the humanisation of Bellamy. Go Blake siblings! Making some serious steps in personal growth. I really hope Bellamy and Clarke hook up. They seem to be getting closer and there's some serious chemistry there. Also, it might be the push Finn needs to break up with Raven. That girl really needs to grow a spine. She went from bad ass mechanic to needy insecure girlfriend and that is not a positive character development.

I'm super excited for the next episode. Grounded showdown y'all!

Am I the only one who keeps thinking that all of the 100's characters from Ark to Earth, no matter how cute, must smell really bad??

There is water rationing on the Ark, so no baths or showers and logically and guessing from the state of their clothes, no washing of clothes either.
Soap isn't too hard to create from ashes but the state of everyone's one outfit hasn't gotten better since they've hit the ground, either.

I keep thinking about the skin problems the people on the Ark would have if they never wash.

I can't imagine that any of the characters with long hair would have been washing it -- certainly not in solitary. So, that has to reek as well.

Lincoln, the Grounder was covered in mud, muck and blood. And are we to believe that the whole time Bellamy had him tied up he never had to relieve himself?

Just the BO alone must be pretty bad -- though to be fair, all of the characters would be really used to that by now. Not real sexy, though.
Reply
Flag
That's the problem with post apocalyptic shows.. I'm looking at you Walking Dead with Maggie's beautifully short hair ... there are inconsistencies to hygiene. Everyone .. I mean EVERYONE should smell sooooooooo bad. And have hair legs because they don't shave.. and.. well they're teenagers...but past puberty...they should be getting some stubble. Bellamy's hair should start growing like Carl's from Walking Dead. Raven must've went down there and been like FInn...wooh...you stink..let's have sex lol

And speaking of..didn't he just get stabbed! Why on earth are you trying to boink him lol

Yeah, though I guess for all of them, Ark peeps to Grounders alike, stinking and being filthy seems to be the norm, so they probably have no real objections.

We're the ones who would be grossed out by their odors.
Reply
Flag
Maybe they use some sort of sonic shower, kinda like the sea shells in Demolition Man. Or, if the water reclamation on the Ark was good enough, they might even be allowed to take showers, with the drainage from the shower being processed into potable water. NASA has a filtration system right now that can recycle up to 95% of all waste water on board a space station. The Ark might have improved on that.

Though they and their clothes look dirty. It could be that the costume designers are going for mended and washed many times but their stuff even before they crash to Earth looks smelly.

Awesome review as always!!!! I am both excited and horrified about the teens having guns. Having Dichen Lachman show up is like a dream, I love her!!! Question; does anyone know if Eliza Taylor and Dichen Lachman in Neighbours (Australian soap) at the same time as Janae and Katia, respectively?

I love how Octavia has spent her entire life hidden away, never attending any parties but instantly knew how to take care of high Jasper. In fact Raven and Finn had some great scenes looking after the stoned 100 as well.

I understand why Bellamy feels guilt regarding the 320 dead but even if he'd never convinced the others to remove their bracelets or destroyed the radio I'm pretty sure they still would have had to float some people.

The Ark government really seems to have procrastinated when it comes to preparing to return to Earth, shown in the fact that they didn't send many winter rations in the drop ship despite sending the hundred down in what would have had to have been autumn considering its now winter and the writers say the first season only covers roughly twenty-two days, and even after they sent the kids down oxygen deprivation was an issue not even ten days later. Now they know that Earth is inhabitable and it turns out that they never bothered attending to the inadequate number of drop ships. Surely this is the kind of thing you have a committee for?
Reply
Flag
Re sending down rations. The Ark sent the 100 down with nothing.

In his speech during their descent, Chancellor Jaha told them that they were being sent with nothing because nothing on the Ark could be spared (particularly since they did not think the kids would be able to survive the radiation there).

What they did give them was directions to the supply cache at Mount Hood.

But the fact that they sent them with nothing is behind the comments Clarke and Bellamy have made about having been sent down to Earth to die.

The 100 is actually so damn good which is especially surprising since it's CW. Love that there's barely any emphasis on the love triangles. There actually hasn't been one episode that has been disappointing, and I can only hope the writers keep this up.

So Dichen Lachman is back on tv, her appearance in the last shot of the last episode of 'Shameless' best season wasn't just a one off - Warner Brothers kept her on the lot and brought her back for another one of their shows - very cool. (I'm excited about this.)

It only took two episodes but Kate Vernon is already the best thing about this show. The former chancellor, 'Diana Sydney', is more awesome that Isaiah Washington's 'Jaha'. She found out how much more fun it can be not having the responsibility that comes with the power. More please show.

Laughing at your comment about the fact that 'Octavia' and Dave (Lincoln) are years apart because on the short lived 'Cult' Marie Avgeropoulos's character was sleeping with 'T-Bag', Robert Knepper, and that was a much more disturbing pair than these two.

I'm coming around on this show. Its a tough job to juggle the action on the arc (ughh adults) and those on the ground but they have made the story on the arc as compelling as the one on the ground and they put some quality VETERAN character actors in those roles in the sky and we're now invested in both stories. This show is a keeper. (Just could learn some lessons from 'Reign' about how to treat its girls.)

'Raven' you are way too smart and too lovely and too awesome to be worrying about Finn or having to strip to get his attention. I'm dreading the episode that tells their backstory in an attempt to rehabilitate Finn and forgive his behavior. I feel bad for beginning to hate on Finn while he is injured. Can't hate on him for falling for the smart beauty in charge, I'm just surprised he and Bellamy seem to be the only ones. (Its kind of funny that the reason he slept with Clarke so quickly is for the 'Raven's arrival to pay off and it worked perfectly.) For a first major role, I've been impressed by Eliza Taylor. A lot of how good this show can be rests on her shoulders and thus far she is handling everything with relative ease. Very nice job Eliza!

How come Bellamy is so much more awesome than Finn? I mean I liked Finn then we met Raven (who was awesome from the minute she was introduced on the arc) and then quickly realized how little he deserved either of these awesome girls who clearly in meeting one another found the best possible soul-mate in each other. (Think about how good they've been when they've worked together for a common purpose.) I'm all about Clarke/Raven just scrapping Finn and falling in love. Then Finn can expose his love of Bellamy, who would be his best partner. (Does it appear to anyone else that whenever Finn is discussing Bellamy its tinted with love and longing?)

This show is getting good. Very nice job with the picture filled coverage. Sorry I haven't stopped her sooner, I'm just trying to catch up on this show.

From what I can tell from IMDB, Marie Avgeropoulos is about 25 (she looks younger and obviously Octavia is meant to be younger) and Ricky Whittle (Dave/Lincoln) is about 33 .... so not too bad. I agree that Robert Knepper would be pushing it a bit far however!

So, next episode the Grounders want to meet with the leader of the 100? Who are they gonna send? Clarke or Bellamy? Remember I said I was drunk when I watched the first episode, so I really don't remember, was it like Clarke was supposed to be the designated leader and then Bellamy just sort of took over? Why was Clarke even in prison!? And why was the chancellor's son in prison? I really have to rewatch that pilot!!
Reply
Flag
There wasn't a designated leader, but since Clarke's parents come from the ruling class on the Ark and were/are in positions of leadership, she hit the ground running, telling the others what to do and putting together a group to head for the supply facility the Chancellor's instructions on their way to the ground had indicated.

Bellamy, because of his fears that he would be killed for assassinating the Chancellor (who unbeknownst to him had only been wounded) also took control, telling the others that there would be no rules on Earth.

Bellamy persuaded and then forced the others to take off the bracelets the Ark was using to monitor them, so that the people on the Ark would think them dead -- all so he could avoid punishment.

This put him in conflict with Clarke who knew that proving that the Earth was survivable would be the only hope for the people on the Ark. She was backed up in going up against Bellamy by Wells (the now-dead son of the Chancellor) and Finn.

The push and pull between Bellamy and Clarke has continued up until this episode where we see Bellamy and Clarke going off on a mission together and coming back (united) with weapons.

The 100 is not really a TV show. It's a cover for an Australian invasion of the US of A.... or Canada, where it's filmed..... I'm not sure on the logistics of this invasion, I just know it's happening and it's happening on The CW! Dichen Lachman being added to the cast is just more proof, if it were needed, that the Aussies. Are. Coming!

Yes, it is weird. Do Australian actors ask for less money than their US counterparts? Is it just that they have good intro into certain casting networks. I don't object because they are good actors -- it's just that I notice them everywhere.

No idea. We get a lot of Australian TV shows here in Ireland so I really like seeing some of my favourites pop up again on these US shows. They seem to be all the rage at the moment. A lot of them are coming from the soaps, maybe that's good training for them? The quality of Aussie soaps is higher than US ones and in the space of 2 to 3 years on one you'd go through every situation known to man, so maybe that's it. It's like a hardcore boot camp for actors?
I think I read something ages ago too about casting directors looking for fresh new faces. The CW especially had a real problem with recycling their actors on different shows, I guess the Aussies are flavour of the month right now. Fair few English and one or two Irish folk popping up here and there too.

It's nice to see that even grounders have time to think about their look, between survivng and killing new commers. Looks like that Lincoln has find the way to produce depilatory wax and take care of his hairy body, natural style.
Dichen Lachman joining the show as a grounder it's a sweet news. I just hope that Lincoln can share with her his wax recepie, you need to feel and look good in the wilderness, while hunting two headed dears or make nice leg warmer with squirrel skin. ;)

I don't know if this will come up, but I assume that it's atleast been considered because of the set design for the supply depot -- can't we assume that the Grounders have already explored and exploited most of the big supply depots and nuclear shelters?

In the shot of the landscape around the depot Bellamy and Clarke investigate in this episode there is a kind of look-out tower that looks like it's built of tree trunks and straw.

The guns Bellamy found: Might they have been hidden? Did they just raid a Grounder weapons cache? Might the Grounders have taboos around using guns and more advanced weaponry?

Anyway, I'm not sure why our 100 characters just keep assuming that everything is up for exploration and is 'virgin' territory. Though I guess that's how colonizers always behave.

What I didn't understand: I thought that the 100's major problem at the start of this ep was that winter was coming and that they didn't have warm enough clothes or structures to survive it.

We got the pay-off of the guns from the depot and Clarke found some blankets (one of which I think Bellamy gives to Octavia at the end of the ep) but aren't they still in the same situation regarding the cold of winter?

They figured out that they can't go live in the supply depot - it's dirty and wet.

Yes, that was super goofy. But it was all down to Raven's insecurity. She went right from Octavia's taunts to confirming Finn's love and then "marking" him as hers with sex. He's an ass for not saying more to her and going along with the guilt sex-- since it's not about what he's done, it's about what he wants to do and it's also not about whether he loves her.

I used to think that but it's actually not true. Not with thoughtful, sensitive types.

Used to think that it was only women who wanted the "is this a relationship" discussion before having sex but have heard enough from friends at this point to know that not every guy is up for an "empty" hook-up.

Though to be fair, re Raven and Finn -- I don't think Finn is lying when he says that he loves her (She says 'Do you love me?' and he says 'Always.' -- so not exactly the same)

Also, did anyone else notice that Lugubrious was waay more helpful and awesome as a hallucination than he has ever been as an actual person? The hallucination of Pretorious I totally would vote for for chancellor! The actual guy, not so much.

And I'm hardcore shipping Bellamy and Clarke now and their horrible, yet somehow awesome, decision to hand out automatic weapons to dozens of teenagers. Allow to quote an old riff from Mystery Science Theater: "Kids with guns, Chuck Heston would love it!"
I'm not even a republican, but even I thought it was kind of hot when Clarke got turned on by the gun.
By the by, that scene could probably be considered porn in some red states.

I think the writers are totally responding to the Bellamy-Clarke shippers. There was almost a close-up on Bellamy touching Clarke's arm in the supply depot and they were almost hugging near Dax's dead body. I think the plan was always to make them closer at this point (for increased tension and conflict) but not according to the interviews to make them a couple, but the writers/director are adding some little touches to satisfy the shippers.
Reply
Flag
I thought the show was filmed months ago? I'm not a shipping type of person, I just like a good story, but even I saw from the first few episodes that the actors/characters have great chemistry, so it would be sort of stupid for them not to develop something that natural. Having said that, can we petition the show writers to not have anymore sex scenes, like ever? they're dreadful.
Reply
Flag
I don't know what the shooting schedule is. I've just seen interviews with Eliza Taylor, Bob Morley (Clarke and Bellamy) and Jason Rothenberg (the show's creator) in which they seemed surprised by that romantic angle.

The show is about relationships, politics and positioning so it totally makes sense for the writers at this point to pull Clarke towards Bellamy and away from Finn -- but that shift doesn't have to be romantic.

I don't know if it will carry through to other eps, but in this one at least the Triangle (that if they go there could become a square) is already taking its toll on decision-making for the group with Clarke angry at Finn and not trusting him enough to want to discuss major group issues with him as she might have done in the past, but still in need to co-leadership throwing in with Bellamy.

Plus, every time she starts to talk to Finn about something (non-romantic) that is going on, Raven inserts herself.

I was going to say that it doesn't matter to me whether the writers make the Clarke-Bellamy alliance romantic, BUT...I am worried that if they do that it could weaken Clarke as a character and make the show more melodramatic than I'd like.

@nicholaskmoose Most people on here and on other social media are shipping Bellarke hard so there probably is no getting away from it now.

I guess fresh in my mind is the total mess that TVD has become in large part because of triangles, bad boy paired with good girl, rotating partners crap.

In discussions about TVD some fans can't stand one of the couplings, others hate how the bad boy character has been tamed and become boring by becoming the boyfriend of the good girl, most viewers are tired of the romantic dynamics, the woman in the triangle has no identity or purpose in the plot apart from it, etc.

Of course the 100 is only in its first season, but I just don't want to see it devolve like that.

If shippers can have their Belarke romance and I can still have my strong, interesting (esp female) characters and compelling storylines beyond the melodrama, then I'll be happy.

Flag
It doesn't matter! Bellamy and Clarke is just common sense from a writing perspective.
That was ALWAYS going to happen.
How it happens will be interesting to see.

I mean, I get that you hate love triangles, but to avoid them is to not watch ANYTHING that has EVER aired on the CW and ALL Archie comic books! And if you are avoiding all of that, then what the hell is life for?

I actually don't mind a good love triangle, but this one seems especially necessary to the story. If you risked death building your own space ship and traveled to a post apocalyptic hell planet just to be with the one guy you have loved for your whole entire life, only to find out that he has already cheated on you because he thought you were dead, I very seriously doubt you would be like, "whatev's! I'm not into love triangles! Now where's that two headed deer everyone's been talking about!? It would be a real shame to come all the way down to the post apocalypse and not see the two headed deer!"

Umm, I think the thing about Raven as well is that she's had such a bad childhood and rough life -- so that raises the stakes. That kind of character isn't going to easily let go of Finn.

The really annoying thing plot-wise is that beyond sleeping with him Clarke actually needs Finn for balance. Without him, she's on team Bellamy -- which given his personality and track record isn't a good thing.

I can't see Raven letting Finn and Clarke go on missions together (alone) anymore, even though really the situation may require it and her presence definitely prevents them from talking though that's essential for the leadership of the camp.

What you are not taking into consideration is that if Clarke were with Bellamy she could change him for the better. If she is truly a strong female character then he doesn't have to change her. They could help each other. The decision to hand out weapons may have seemed extreme, but really, that wasn't all just Bellamy's influence. If you are in that much danger and find a truckload of firearms, she knew, you can't just leave them there. This is all about survival.

I agree that they could help each other. Though, I cringed when I read the part about Clarke changing him -- maybe because I've seen this attempted unsuccessfully too many times in real life.

I'll change him is a common recurring fantasy when the reality is he is what he is and if he's to change, that has to come from within.

Since we are speeding ahead with a shortened season, if as with Kane, Bellamy's redemption is only accounted for by this ep, then I have real trouble believing it will mean real change.

A strong Clarke: For Clarke and Bellamy to be together the dynamics between the characters would have to change.

Right now Clarke is an independent character who calls him on his sh*t every time. It's harder to do that consistently when someone is your boyfriend.

Now he owns his mistakes. Together Clarke will wear some of that as well.

And for his part, Bellamy has real trouble seeing the main woman in his life now, Octavia, as an independent person with her own ideas. As far as he's concerned, she's someone/something he has to protect even if that means disrespecting her wishes and physical space. I would worry that Bellamy would try to transfer that kind of treatment onto Clarke as he begins to care about her (look at the Charlotte example).

maybe I'm just a very curmudgeonly, unromantic person. Definite possibility haha. Growing up, I didn't watch Dawson's creek or anything like it. So these things just make me cringe. I enjoy the show because it's fun, but the triangle stuff induces pretty intense eye-rolling and pulls me right out of the story.

I think there are all kinds of teenagers. I didn't watch teen soaps when I was a teen and probably would have rolled my eyes.

I think a lot of what is accepted as "for teens" is a taste created for them by adults.

Given the situation, you'd expect some friction between the characters, awkwardness and even mistrust but I just don't want to see full-blown melodrama. And I don't think this is the right show for complete backstabbing hijinks as in Pretty Little Liars either (as much as I sometimes enjoy that).

Yes, most of the main characters are teenagers but this is also science fiction and that's really the frame I'd like to see the writers focus on, not melodrama or bed-hopping.

There is so much more about this world and even just about the non-romantic motivations and interactions of the characters to reasonably hold someone's interest.
Flag
Well, Dawson's is not for everyone. Now maybe you would like the O.C as a starter drug for teen drama! -at least it was a teen drama where Seth Cohen-who was one of the main teens-was one of the best characters and was always talking about comic books!
I guess I just appreciate the art form of soapy stuff-even if it is low art, it is like dadaism to me-the cheesier the 50's movie, the soapier the teen drama-I dig it!

Well, nicholaskmoose, I suppose that's one way to look at it (replying to your other comment down there). But I resent the fact that we think teens should be given ridiculous nonsensical writing on a tv show -- I remember being 15, and I didn't really watch anything that was "aimed" at me: I watched classic star trek with my dad, stargate, etc. And I was perfectly able to keep up.

In this kind of world, kids are NOT kids -- they all understand the harshness of life, the death penalty. They have to grow up, or they won't survive. And to put such focus on teen hormones (I'm sorry, but it ain't love if it's been 10 days) is just not logical. These kids are trying to make it to the next day alive. They're exhausted, afraid, and they realistically don't have the energy for this kind of petty adolescent crap.

This is what makes the show and the triangle annoying for me.

When I was 15, it was the mid 90's, so I watched Mystery Science Theater 3,000 and Space Ghost Coast To Coast. So I have a sense of humor.
Also, I had already watched the Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, and Star Trek-but you know what I was also watching roughly around that era? DAWSON'S CREEK! And Buffy! Of course. Buffy was the gateway drug to teen drama. But I also watched soaps with my grandma growing up, and also, read comic books, and what was Spiderman but a fucking soap opera!?
Even the lame brains who watch only the Spiderman movies by now must realize that it is a love triangle, Peter, Gwen, Mary Jayne-or the other fifty love triangles that happened in that book back when it was good!
And funny, my intelligence never felt insulted by it.

And that's why the sex part of it mucks the whole thing up, because I agree, Clarke DOES need Finn to be a voice of reason. But because of the emotional teenybopper drama, it makes things awkward for Clarke, and the emotional aspect can cloud her judgment.

And to answer the poster above, NO, the triangle is not necessary. Let Clarke continue to be a big girl and completely move on with life. What's done is done, but she shouldn't look back. She can't trust Finn like that again (although she should obviously still listen to his concerns about the camp/grounder situation).

I liked this episode but it was average

These 100 are resourceful: after shitty radio connection they now have Skype, a berries workspace with food packaging and a clean water tab.

How awkward is that love triangle, and only cause Finn’s got deep (cough) feelings for Clark and can’t deal with Raven. Raven, no exercise means no exercise even if you do all the work, still bad. Also doing it just to keep your man isn’t right.

I’m only going to say this once (and you’ll never hear it from me again): Octavia was great this episode. First telling off Raven, helping Jasper with the Anti Grounder Stick, getting everyone high. Getting her grounder cleaned up, starting with his abs first instead of his bloody face, she’s got great priorities. She freed him and Finn just let him go? (also spoiler from next week’s promo: he set up a meet with grounders, I get the feeling I’m going to hate Finn from now on. On a fun note, grounders have horses)

Didn’t care for Clarks hallucination, even high she’s thinking and reasoning out everything.

Commander Shumway back to his old game. I thought they were going to drag out the tattling, but no they told Jaha. The mastermind reveal wasn’t a surprise at all (called it last week).

Well, that was a new use for bullets. (Didn’t get it first, I was like WTF how can hitting him on his jaw with a bullet hurt bad enough to knock him out? I guess it was the camera angles fault).

Did I detect some Roman architecture? I liked the fact that they showed more ‘civilization’ then just that old car and bunker, it is necessary. They should do it more cause it feels more like they are just camping in the woods instead of surviving in a place that nature took back.

Raven and that dude: You’re the most beautiful broom in a broom closet of brooms (hug) and Finn just standing there. LOL

I think Finn is right. They've just returned to a world destroyed by war and here they are escalating towards a war with the grounders (who would actually make good allies).

They so far haven't made any attempt to talk to the grounders, but they should.

They should talk to the grounders, but the grounders are only killing them....so how does one start up a conversation before being skewered?

That's what they could have used Lincoln for and apparently still can.

It also seems that Lincoln can read, so the other Grounders may be able to as well -- so they could have left messages for them to read.

@Sqlady I mentioned reading because though I didn't see them, others have noted more than one book on the floor of Lincoln's cave.

The 100 have done a bunch of things the Grounders may consider threatening:

1) Their crash landing -- may have seemed like an air strike, attack or invasion

2) The bonfires and whooping. As viewers we know the world they are coming from and that they are letting off steam and enjoying freedom for the first time, but the Grounders wouldn't

3) The 100s' attempts to get to Mount Hood -- the actions that got Jasper speared. I'm guessing that there is already a conflict with its own boundary lines going on

4) The fuel canisters turned into flares may have looked like a missile launch to the Grounders

5) Bellamy's incursion into clearly marked off territory in search of Octavia

6) Kidnapping Lincoln (if he tells anyone)

7) The visit to the supply depot

8) The militarization of the 100's camp -- they've built a wall and fortifications

9) Raven's crash landing

10) The space kids just generally tramp around everywhere without any regard for things or spaces that might belong to the Grounders

Nor sure about the reading but he can draw, but why not have the grounders try to approach, after all with the whooping, and sex from the initial landing it would be obvious that these new comers are not an immediate threat and might need help or be helpful in some way...but that's logic and as we know logic makes for poor young adult drama give them brains and no one would watch.... :)

"Then Octavia, being the tricksy minx she is, snuck up to see Dave Lincoln. They shared some banter, and then she offered to “clean him up a bit”'

Cleaned his abs, yeah that was weird, she should have cleaned his face... I can only imagine his sweet breath and yummy blood smell when he kissed her...

So no cache of Doritos or Cheetos... not even pop corn? DAMN! But hey, we got some new toys... Sometimes they don't work and some of them might explode in our hands, who knows, but they're slick and shiny...

There was a scene when Bellamy is "teaching" Clarke to shoot where "he gets distracted by being so close to her" I thought that was a bit overacted, my eyes rolled 360 degrees LOL.

Yeah Kane is not as nefarious as we were lead to think LOL. Now, that blonde woman instead... She is looking a bit cartoonish right now, we need more background story here pronto!

Nice recap @Toni_watches !

The monitor was on the drop ship, remember? They were watching Jaha on it as they came down to Earth.

That Dax kid reminded me that most of these kids are criminals. I keep forgetting that.

Jasper and the stick are a beautiful thing. OTP. I want to see more of Jasper and Monty together.

Love love love how Bellamy and Clarke bonded in this episode. They are so much more interesting together than Finn and Clarke. I loved their hallucinations. Good stuff. #Bellarke

Yes Finn is really douchey and I was disappointed that Raven didn't give him hell for cheating on her. She just hopped right back on his D. She has become the possessive girlfriend.

GUNS. I don't think this will end well.

I think ppl are misjudging what Raven did. Sexing Finn WAS NOT PASSIVE.

She did it right after talking to Octavia to 1) confirm their relationship [it's why she asked Finn if he loved her] and 2) bind him to her/mark him as hers.

I actually don't think Finn sleeping with Clarke constitutes cheating at all.

Maybe he should have talked to Clarke about the fact that he'd had a girlfriend on the Ark, but sex with Clarke happened quickly and in a moment of desperation (Clarke was trying to comfort Finn who was feeling frustrated, angry and sad about being 'all alone').

True there was a lot of build-up between the characters to that moment, but it's not like Clarke and Finn had been kissing and holding hands all along.

What this ep's sex scene has set up now though is 'The Line.'

Finn has now reconfirmed his relationship with Raven. If he'd wanted to break up with her or take some time off or even to say he is confused right now, his chance to say any of these things has now passed.

If he's intimate with Clarke again after this point, that's when the s**t will hit the fan. And then Raven would be completely justified in going all Jerry Springer on his ass.

Great review, but... Dave? Dax? Beautiful Whatever? Do you give random names to all characters you review just as you see fit? By the way, Dax was the name of Terry Farrell's character in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. And "Theseus" has such a douche face I wanna punch. He plays the same type in Continuum and a number of other shows. I think the actor has already been typecast.

Speaking of typecast, Shumway (no relation with Gordon) is also Curtis on Continuum, who also happens to be a backstabbing son of a gun.

Lincoln, really? Is that the Grounder's name? Like the president? I was expecting something more savage and tribal like "Torak" or "Killer Wind," and that he would be speaking a gibberish native tongue instead.

You're so right about the monitor and headset. Especially after all the trouble to fix the radio, now they have a fine telecommunications workstation? How come?

And what's the deal with Octavia and bad boys? First, one of Bellamy's minions. They she had a pity thing for Jasper. And now, a Grounder. No wonder her brother is crazy watching out for her. But on the bright side, Marie Avgeropoulos is my new TV crush.

Keep the good work!

The fact that they're speaking English and have names like "Lincoln" actually makes sense since seem to be pretty close to the ruins of Washington D.C. and are therefore descendents of Americans and nearby a city full of historical monuments; Australians and Americans still speak English after hundreds of years away from England, so it's not much of a stretch.

They could have called the brother "Ford Lincoln Mercury" like they did in The Postman!

As for Octavia and Jasper-- Let this video say it all.

He won't even be this jucky!

OK, you're trying to tell me something with this video, ans as soon as I figure out what, I'll let you know. Oh, and I hate cryptic messages!

About Lincoln, maybe the Grounders are all names after former presidents: Lincoln, Kennedy, Washington, Lyndon Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Obama... But they wouldn't know where their names had come from. Wouldn't that be cool?

I've been wondering the same about the Ark people. Their names are all unusual and so I wondered whether they come from US history or are the family names of the original Ark residents? Monroe was a US president.

Or they had a thing for Monroe Brake And Muffler...

Well the video is just funny! I mean not to mention the fact that Jasper isn't getting anywhere with Octavia...

I figured they literally named him after character in the Postman. Ford Lincoln Mercury...

it is really hard not to laugh at this film actually.

Hah, looking the actor up on IMDB and he was guest in NCIS had his name was wait for it ........LIncoln.... ok so not original but i like the smirking factor.

My first thought when the grounder said his name was lincoln was the postman and then the island.......

Actually I did laugh. I was making a joke about the fact that it's so in-your-face about what it's about.

Great recap. You've got my fidelity as long as the series goes.

And yes, Raven is too awesome for that storyline!
