      • The Life of Emile Zola is the first biopic to win Best Picture.

      • This year marked the first presentation of The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. It was presented during the ceremony to producer Darryl F. Zanuck.

      • Actress Alice Brady won the year's Best Supporting Actress prize for her performance in In Old Chicago. Unfortunately, because of a broken ankle, she was unable to attend. During the ceremony, when her name was called, an unidentified man came up to the podium and accepted the award on the actress' behalf. A week later, Brady called the academy to complain that she hadn't receive her award, and when they told her about the man she told them that she had not sent anyone to accept her Oscar. Neither the stolen Oscar nor the man who walked away with it were ever heard from again. Alice Brady died of cancer before a replacement could reach her.

      • Edgar Bergen was presented with an honorary award "For his outstanding comedy creation, Charlie McCarthy". During the ceremony he brought his puppet pal with him to the podium and they were presented with a wooden Oscar with a movable mouth.

      • A heavy rainstorm blew into Los Angeles and caused flooding just two days before the Academy Awards ceremony. With safety concerns in mind, it was decided that the proceedings would be postponed for a week.
