When presenting the Best Picture Oscar this year, Laurence Oliver forgot to name the other nominees. He simply opened the envelope and proclaimed the winner which was Amadeus.
This was the year in which Sally Field (who won Best Actress for Place in the Heart) delivered her famous "You like me!" speech. In the years that would follow The Academy would use her speech as a suggestion to their potential winners of how not to deliver and acceptance speech.
Stevie Wonder dedicated his Oscar for Best Original Song to the then imprisoned civil rights leader Nelson Mandela. As a result the South African government banned all his music from the country.
The program won an Emmy Award forOutstanding Art Direction for a Variety or Music Program.
Stevie Wonder, who one the Oscar for Best Original Song for "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from The Woman in Red, became the first blind person to receive an Oscar.
Best Picture winner Amadeus was the first film to win the award from Orion Pictures.
