    • Jane Campion was the first woman to be nominated for Best Director since Lina Wertmuller in 1975.

    • Even though it was already accepted that Steven Spielberg would win his first Oscar for directing Schindler's List, he refused to discuss his chances for fear of jinxing it.

    • Billy Crystal turned down an offer to host this year's Academy Awards because he felt that after hosting The Academy Awards, The American Comedy Awards, The TV Hall of Fame Awards and Comic Relief VI, he felt he was getting burned out on hosting duties.
