As an encouragement to keep the this year's awards short, a television was offered to whoever gave the shortest acceptance speech. The TV went to Michael Dudok de Wit (winner of Best Animated Short).
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon became the foreign film with the most nominations in Oscar history with 10.
Steven Soderbergh: I want to thank anyone who spends a part of their day creating. I don't care if it's a book, a film, a painting, a dance, a piece of theatre, a piece of music. Anybody, anybody who spends a part of their day sharing their experience with us. I think this world would be unlivable without art and I thank you.

Steve Martin: You know, I saw the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and I didn't see any tigers or dragons. Then I realized, it's because they're crouching and hidden.

The program won an Emmy Award forOutstanding Sound Mixing for a Variety or Music Series or Special.
The award category for Animated Feature Film was added this year. The first Oscar in this category went to Shrek.
