Another passable adventure with Brisco, Bowler, and Socrates. Interestingly enough I like the interaction with the three of them better overall than some of the interaction earlier in the show, but the stories seem to be a tad less inspired than earlier episodes. I noticed in doing some research that almost every episode is written by a different writer. The last two episodes which have been a little less from a storyline point of view were written by new and different writers than any of the earlier episodes.

The name of the episode seems a little misleading as well but is appropriate to one single part of the story. Coles daughter turns out to be Coles mother who he was treating for her terrible arthritis and the medicine had a secondary effect. Obviously he realized his mistake as he refused to make her any more of the medicine.

The good looking out law gang was an interesting twist. I don't think these guys would make it as outlaws long though as they are way to vain to live in the West and be on the run regularly.

Nice twist to get all the principals together at the end. Also an interesting ending which also brings up additional questions for which the boys will have to deal with.

An entertaining episode as they all have a tendency to be, just not quite as good as some of the really special early ones have been. Thanks for reading...moreless
  • Brisco and Bowler encounter Professor Coles' so called 'daughter', who it turns out is in cahoots with Bly and harbouring a surprising secret; and who has her own reasons for searching for the Orb. An episode with some surprising revelations...moreless

    This review contains spoilers.

I found the first half of this episode to be reasonable, but not as sharp as some of the others and took me a while to grasp the plot fully.

The story of Professor Coles' 'daughter' (actually his mother, rejuvenated by "medicine" from the Orb) reminded me in some ways of the 'Star Trek' episode 'The Deadly Years' and the in many ways similar 'Next Generation' story 'Unnatural Selection', which both involve people aging in strange ways.

I rank the first half of this story as interesting but pretty average. It is not until the later stages, with the surprising revelations about Bly's true origins, that things really pick up. Although there had been hints about it in the odd previous episode, I found the explanations about him to be a real shock.

At the climax of the story, Brisco – by way of a 'special bullet' – traps Bly in the Orb. But this is not the last we have seen of the character!

All-in-all, a fairly good episode. As I say, the first half is interesting but not as sharp as some other stories, but the climatic events and explanations lift things up.moreless
