  • After Brisco gets a note from an old childhood friend he heads to a town in Colorado where Bly is supposedly hanging out. Brisco meets Professor Ogden Coles who is an Orb expert and finds the town of Poker Flats run by outlaws affiliated with Bly.moreless

An entertaining if not more absurd story than you usually find Brisco involved in. Brisco manages to escape death about half a dozen times in this episode as does Lord Bowler as well. Still this show is tounge-in-cheek. Even when Brisco finally catches the truly bad guys they all get locked away when it might have been better to shoot them all and let it be.

We see Brisco's first real encounter face to face with Bly and Bly's use of psychology to force the good guy Brisco to fight what should be an even fight. Of course Bly always has things stacked his way, but even then you have the feeling Bly won't win.

Professor Coles is an interesting character and obviously the Orb is a running piece of the whole seasons story. This would leave us to believe we might see Big Mike again before the seasons out as well.

We also see the beginning of the relationship that Brisco and Bowler obviously will develop over time. They are good separately, but even better together and Bowler makes the perfect Brisco County Jr. sidekick. This episode was a little to tongue-in-cheek for me, but was fun and entertaining to watch. The relationship with his young pal Donovan was a little strange, but that worked out in the end as well. As Brisco is paid to do what he does, Bowler ends up making a pretty good haul overall and things in Poker Flats get back to normal for the good people. Thanks for reading...moreless
  • Brisco locates Bly in a town where his former friend who once double-crossed him, is the town sheriff. Saving a Professor from being robbed, Brisco learns that the second Orb is in the area and Bly is on the trail. An enjoyable episode…moreless

    This review contains moderate spoilers.

Although produced after 'Socrates' Sister', this is the first broadcast episode after the Pilot. Although I enjoyed both episodes, I personally enjoyed this one slightly more than 'Socrates' Sister'.

The nature of the plots is now in place, being fairly simple on one hand, but having many twists and turns on the other (if that makes sense)!

Socrates has very little screen time in this episode, but his character is slowly growing (here we see him trying his hand at indoor golf). In a way, he reminds me of Devon Miles in 'Knight Rider', both being the well-spoken and educated straight man to the roughish leads.

This is also a good episode for Bowler, who has some good scenes, and Julius Carry has a very good rapport with Bruce Campbell. It sows the seeds from the pair going from rivals to being more as friends over the course of the series. I like the last scene as they race off on their horses together.

With the inclusion of the Orb, this episode is more science fiction based than some of the episodes.

When Bly shoots Brisco and leaves him for dead, you wonder how he's going to survive this one (I guessed wrongly that he had something hidden under his shirt). It's convenient that the Orb is nearby to save him!

Although I feel there are better episodes yet to come in the series, this in itself is a good episode.moreless
