  • A monumental television achievement. Jeremy Brett shines above all other Sherlocks.

This episode is a great example of the show's strengths. To transfer this story to screen, Granada took liberty with Doyle's work. Instead of Holmes coming to Watson's lodgings and describing his discussion of the case with Major Murphy, Holmes and Watson travel to Aldershot and the Major describes the circumstances directly to them, while Holmes snoops about, interjecting a question or quip here and there to keep the narrative relevant. In the original Conan Doyle story, the mystery is rather tame, much of the plot is known beforehand, and all is left is for Holmes to find and speak to the mysteriously crooked man, when all will be revealed. In fact, no crime takes place at all. What makes this show really special is the meticulous detail in the set designs, costumes, and of course the flawless character acting. David Burke's well-balanced Watson keeps reign on Brett's arrogant, impulsive, almost mad genius Holmes. This is the pinnacle of television production. They have captured the essence of turn-of-the-century London and Sir Arthur's characters to perfection.
