This episode is based on two of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories - The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone, which first appeared in The Strand magazine in October, 1921, and The Adventure of the Three Garridebs, which appeared in The Strand in January, 1925.
Granada Television had announced that they intended to produce all sixty of the Sherlock Holmes stories, so it seems strange that they decided to combine two of them in this way.
