First appearance of Colin Jeavons as Inspector Lestrade.
The end credits for this episode appear initially over a scene as John Hector McFarlane returns to his family home.
Sherlock: Gentlemen: would you please join me in the call of "fire"? One, two, three: fire!
Constables: (Halfheartedly) Fire.
Sherlock: We can do better than that. Full voice. And together.
All: Fire!
Lestrade: Mr. Holmes! I don't know whether you are playing a game with us, but surely you can tell us without all this tomfoolery.
Holmes: I can assure you, Lestrade, I have an excellent reason for everything that I do.
Sherlock: You mentioned your name just now as if I should recognize it, but I can assure you, beyond the obvious facts that you are a bachelor, a solicitor, and a freemason, and an asthmatic, I know nothing about you whatever.
(John McFarlane looks at Watson, confused and dazed.)
Watson: Your (ahem) untidy clothes, sheaf of legal papers, watch-chain, and your somewhat irregular breathing.

This episode is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story The Adventure of the Norwood Builder, which first appeared in Collier's magazine in October, 1903.
The dramatization brings a seafaring tramp into the story to fulfil the role which Doyle left to "a dead dog or a couple of rabbits".
