A Kryptonite meteor falls in Addis Ababa and is sent to Shuster for study. It turns up in one of Clark's classes, a class on minerals. There, Clark feels the pain of kryptonite for the first time. When Lex Luthor learns of it's value as an energy source, he takes a piece of it, using it in a machine to commit crimes. This new threat makes it difficult for Superboy to help when needed.moreless
Why does Lex pocket the Kryptonite in the first place? We know why Clark is ill, but the characters shouldn't. Lex taking it would imply some knowledge that Clark is Superboy but given we haven't seen Lex featured in many episodes yet, it's doubtful that he'd know. Deus ex machina...i guess.
Edit
When the Kryptonite is revealed to the TV audience, the Kryptonite is green. When they pull out the the shot of the professor showing it to the class, the Kryptonite is clear. Even in close-ups (as Clark becomes ill), the Kryptonite is clear. When Lex pockets the Kryptonite, it is green again.
Edit
Shouldn't Clark have gotten ill or at least start to be affected by the Kryptonite as soon as the professor enters the room? The Kryptonite is revealed to be in a wicker box of some sort, the shipping box is wood...no lead in sight. Of course, the minute the Kryptonite is revealed...Clark reacts to it.
Edit
Kryptonite in this episode has the appearance of a translucent green crystal. It looks very similar to a quartz crystal. And it is rarely shown glowing. It is never seen this way again. For the rest of the series, it has more of a rock like appearance and is always glowing.
Edit
The professor identifying this kryptonite meteor as from Addis Ababa is a nod to the 1978 Superman movie, where Gene Hackman's Luthor deduces that a kryptonite meteor fell there the same time as Superman's arrival on Earth. (Though the peasants shown in the opening sequence look more Latin American than African, shrug.)
