Episode Summary

During a trip home, Clark learns that a businessman named Kenderson wants to buy all the farms in the Smallville area during an agricultural depression. Many attempts are made to force the Kents to surrender to the buy out until they find out why: there is a river running underneath the farms and Kenderson wants to sell the water. Superboy has to stop him, as he plans to blow up the community silo to destroy whatever profits the farms could make on their harvest.moreless

  • That this introduces key characters makes the sidelining of a regular more odd.

This is a key episode as the first Smallville story and the first appearences of Stuart Whitman as Pa Kent and Salome Jens as Ma Kent, who although never regulars were, with Stacy Haiduk's Lana Lang, the only supporting characters to appear in all 4 seasons of this series. This makes it the more curious that Haiduk (Lana) makes only "bookend" appearences in this episode at its beginning and end -- does anyone know if this was simply due to a schedule conflict, or was there some intention to make the rival "gorgeous good friend" who fills the Pretty Girl role in this story a rival? (As Chloe is to Lana in the current SMALLVILLE series.) Minor but significant.moreless
