Episode Summary

EDIT
Episode 1 | Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
AIRED:
10 teams of 2 set out from the city of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and were instructed to travel by taxi to Times Square Shopping Center. All teams struggled to find taxis and it became quite a hassle. Once there, teams learned that they had to make their way to Kompleks Kraf, where teams faced their very first Detour. Teams had the choice of painting and tracing a traditional silk batik painting which required steady hands or make a bowl on a pottery wheel to receive their next clue. Both tasks proved to be a little tricky but all teams eventually completed their choice quickly. Once completed, teams had to jump into a car and drive to City Carting Enterprise to find their next clue. Teams then had to go kart around a track completing four individual laps to complete the task. Some teams fell behind in this task due to miscounting the laps required to complete the task. Next, teams were instructed to make their way to the Pit Stop. In a very close foot race to the finish, one team was unable to catch up and checked in last place. They were given a reprieve when they learned that this was the first of four Pre-Determined Non-Elimination legs.moreless

  • This Asian version of this show has it's own appeal. I spent a lot of time in that part of the world but did not see the sights as well as I should have. Same premise as the original show but less money to the winner.moreless

    9.0
The show is shot in English and then shown in the various countries with either voice overs or subtitles. I have seen both, one version for the Australia and New Zealand markets all in English and then one shown in Singapore with subtitles.

The look and feel of the show is the same, for some listening to the people communicate in accented English is hard to understand, but then I spent a few years there I had no problems.

The teams are an unusual collection of couples, especially the gay team, which may not be as accepted in Asia as in other parts of the world. The teams are younger overall than the US race, no old couple, but overall a good mix.

How will this play out, I do not know.

The convoluted path to the pit stop was a first and making a team go back and find the right was was exciting.

This episode did not have a road block and some of the first episodes of the American version did not either, or they did not show them. This episode also did not have an elimination a first for the series, but did have two complicated tasks that were required before they could get their first and last clues. Both members had to absail at the mall before getting the clue to the detour, then after the detour both teams had to race around the track before getting the clue for the pit stop. At the pit stop it was a long and tiring walk to the mat.moreless
  • The Amazing Race Asia pits contestants from different countries in Asia against each other as they race to the finish line, having to face obstacles and trials along the way.

    8.0
I really enjoyed The Amazing Race Asia (TARA), compared with the US version of The Amazing Race (TAR). One of the differences between the two is the way the contestants handle each situation, giving the show a distinct Asian flavor, while retaining the original elements of the show. TARA also showcases more of Asia, as well as a more in-depth look at the differing cultures. It was interesting to see that while everyone is from a neighbouring country, they are not very familiar with each other's customs and ways. All in all, worth watching to see who makes it to the next round.moreless

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • On the way to the Pit Stop, teams were instructed to follow a certain trail in the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve to the top of the Kuala Lumpur Tower. Even though Andrew & Syeon arrived at the Pit Stop 1st, they did not follow the required trail to the tower, and were asked to complete it before checking in. Because of this, they dropped down to fifth place.

    • Andrew & Syeon arrived first but forgot to complete the jungle trail and had to go back and do it. Therefore, they finished fifth.

    • There was no Fast Forward or Yield in this leg of the race.

    • Detour: In this leg's Detour teams had to choose between "Paint" or "Pot".
In "Paint" teams had to trace and paint a traditional silk batik painting. This task required steady hands.
In "Pot" teams had to successfully make a bowl on a pottery wheel, with one team member controlling the speed of the wheel while the other person shaped the pot.

Most teams chose the Painting task because it was possibly the faster choice of the two.

    • There was no Roadblock in this leg

  • NOTES (2)

    • This leg was the first of four non-elimination points of the race. As for the rules, any team that finished last on a non-elimination leg would be 'Marked For Elimination'. This meant that on the following leg, that team would incur a 30-minute penalty upon arriving at the Pit Stop unless they were the first to finish. This could also mean the possibility of elimination.

    • This episode marked the first time that any version of The Amazing Race had it's first leg as a Non-Elimination round.
