I Wonder If They Like Blondes in New Zealand?

Season 13, Episode 4, Aired
EDIT

Episode Summary

At the Pit Stop in La Paz, Bolivia, frustrations continue to build between two teams. The remaining teams receive a clue instructing them to fly 6,900 miles to Auckland, New Zealand. There, the teams face tricky nighttime navigation to the Gulf Harbor, where they must untie a Gordian knot. Inside the knots, the teams find a clue instructing them to travel to Mount Eden, a dormant volcano and Auckland's highest point. The knots also include a clue for the Fast Forward, which one team successfully completes, providing a break from the leg's challenging and often frustrating tasks. The other teams forge ahead with those tasks, first completing a detail-oriented Roadblock. They then travel to the City Life Hotel and search for Travelocity gnomes from the rooftops. After finding the gnomes, the teams receive a clue instructing them to drive to Kiwi 360, a local landmark. The teams then face a Detour choice between two tasks that are both gruelingly physical in their own way. One racer is injured during one of these tasks, but plows ahead nevertheless. Ultimately, two teams fight it out on separate tasks late at night, but one ends up being too late and is eliminated from the race.moreless

This was the second consecutive amazin episode, and I enjoyed this aone a lot! It was quite original, and another leg in New Zealand was due.

I thought the knowt was interesting to see, and the Fast Forward was really scary! Tht was absolutely freaky!

The Rod Block was quite different, and I highly enjoyed it! The Maoris were great, and I loved the one that scared Marisa (or Brooke?) at their turn!

The Detour was also sensational. Quite different tasks, and very interesting to see. I was surprised so many teams failed to squash kiwis!

Overall, an amazing episoe. It was flawleess, and itf they keep this up, this season is certainly headed on the right track!moreless

    ADD TRIVIA
    • Host Phil Keoghan's dad appeared as the greeter at the Pit Stop for this leg of the race. Edit
    • Detour: Teams in this leg were given a choice of either Matter of Time or Matter of Skill. In Matter of Time, teams were required to travel to a kiwi orchard and crush kiwis using their feet to make twelve quarts of juice. Each then had to drink a glass of it. In Matter of Skill, teams traveled to BloCart Heaven and then assembled two BloCarts, which they were then required to complete three laps on. Terence & Sarah, Kelly & Christy and Marisa & Brooke all successfully completed Matter of Time. Toni & Dallas completed Matter of Skill. Andrew & Dan, Nick & Starr and Aja & Ty all initially opted for Matter of Time, but became frustrated with the task and switched to Matter of Skill. Ken & Tina bypassed the Detour by successfully completing the leg's Fast Forward. Edit
    • Fast Forward: This leg featured the first of only two Fast Forwards on this edition of the race. In order to claim the Fast Forward, teams were required to travel to the Auckland Sky Tower and then climb from the sky deck to the top and pick up a friend, a Travelocity roaming gnome. Ken and Tina successfully completed this task, allowing them to ride a helicopter directly to the Pit Stop and bypass all other tasks. Edit

    • Phil: (after Marisa and Brooke are eliminated) Are you offering to give them a hug? Phil's Dad: Yes, I am. Phil: That's my dad. Edit
    • Starr: The arm is hurting really bad, but we're still team 5. We're still here. Edit

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Toni: This looked so much more fun when Lucy and Ethel did it. In the midst of using her bare feet to squeeze juice out of kiwi fruit, Toni recalls a famous episode of I Love Lucy: "Lucy's Italian Movie" (4/16/56) where Lucy finds herself squeezing grapes with her bare feet in the traditional manner. Lucy's companion in the vat is not in fact Ethel, but an unnamed Italian woman. Edit
