There was some speculation that Derek and Drew might end up in fifth or sixth, despite having claimed the Fast Forward, because they left on a later bus than the lead teams. As things transpired, the Fast Forward gave them enough of a lead that they were able to skip ahead and finish first.
The teams finished in the following order: #1. Derek and Drew. (Fast Forward) #2. Aaron and Arianne. #3. Heather and Eve. #4. Michael and Kathy. #5. Flo and Zach. #6. Ken and Gerard. #7. John Vito and Jill. #8. Andre and Damon. #9. Dennis and Andrew. #10. Teri and Ian. #11. Tramel and Talicia. (ELIMINATED)
Time Penalty: Phil informs viewers that Andre/Damon received a 78 minute penalty for unwittingly not following the provided map in the previous leg's Wheels Detour option. It included a 48 minute time penalty + a standard 30 minute punitive penalty. This caused them to depart 9th, even though they'd been 7th to arrive. In addition, they overslept, leaving a further 3 minutes later than they could have.
Balance Sheet: Derek and Drew move up from eleventh to first. Aaron and Arianne move up from third to second. Heather and Eve move up from sixth to third. Michael and Kathy remain in fourth. Flo and Zach move down from second to fifth. Ken and Gerard move down from first to sixth. John Vito and Jill move down from fifth to seventh. Andre and Damon move down from seventh to eighth. Dennis and Andrew move down from eighth to ninth. Teri and Ian move down from ninth to tenth. Tramel and Talicia move down from tenth to last and are eliminated.
Derek and Drew moved from eleventh place in the previous leg to first place this leg. This is the highest jump in position as of the eleventh season of The Amazing Race.
Detour: Michael/Kathy and Ken/Gerard chose "Man Power," where they had to paddle a kayak around an area of water in search of a buoy with the next clue. Flo/Zach, Aaron/Arianne, Heather/Eve, Tramel/Talicia, Teri/Ian, Dennis/Andrew, and Andre/Damon chose "Horse Power," where they searched a much larger area of water, but did so on a WaveRunner. John Vito/Jill initially attempted Man Power, but eventually completed Horse Power as well. Derek/Drew bypassed the Detour via the Fast Forward.
Roadblock: One member from each team was required put on a snorkel mask and fins and swim with a family of dolphins to find the next clue at the bottom of the lagoon. Arianne, Heather, Zach, Michael, Ian, Damon, Andrew and Tramel completed the Roadblock. Derek and Drew skipped the Roadblock via the Fast Forward. Ken/Gerard and Jon Vito/Jill's Roadblock performance was not aired.
Fast Forward: Teams had to go to the Museum of Anthropology and climb a 100 foot pole then, hanging by their feet, swing around the pole to the bottom. Derek and Drew completed this Fast Forward.
Aaron: There's some sexual tension between Flo and Zach. My question is why they haven't just done it? Arianne: The question is why they haven't just done it?
Talicia: Team TnT, we're all wet, no longer explosive and we're signing out.
Tramel: We gotta go to Chakanab, no Chankanav. (pauses) Why can't nothing be called Detroit?
Talicia: This is Team TnT. Tramel: We only need a spark and we'll blow the house down!
Talicia: You seem to be communicating well. Tramel: I just take it back to caveman times. You know, point, grunt and smile!
Flo: They're following us because they think we know where we're going. Zach: Because we're betta, fasta and much much betta!
Arianne: This doesn't seem like the path to anywhere. This seems like the path straight to Hell!
Michael: I can't kayak. I can't skydive. I can't swim. But I can cook.
Michael: I said "Yeah, I'll swim". And then I remembered I can't swim.
Talicia: (after capsizing WaveRunner again) This is just a comedy of errors. Tramel: I know. At least I get to pee, though.
Ken: (regarding Jill) ...and all of sudden I see her climbing up the pyramid like Cat Woman!
Teri: (really loudly and urgently) ...last team to check in will be eliminated!
A couple of editors for for TV Guide got to join in for this leg of the race, and wrote about it for the week's edition of the magazine.
Ken refers to Jill as "Catwoman," comparing her dexterity to that of the same-named feline criminal played by Lee Meriweather, Eartha Kitt, and Julie Newmar in the Batman television show, and Michelle Pfieffer in the movie Batman Returns.
