  • Uniquely and bizarrely entertaining.

This cartoon is based on a Mike Mignola (Hellboy) comic. While it shares similar supernatural motifs and levels of violence with Hellboy (and the same animation style seen in the Hellboy animated movies), it's a more whimsical affair. The setting is pre-civil war USA, where the eponymous hero of show is working as a special agent of Abraham Lincoln. The technology in use is decidely steam-punk and gives the world a different feel.

While at first it's a bit impenetrable, and the main character somewhat unlikable, the wit and verve of the script fully pull you into the story. Emperor Zombie in particular is a wonderful, hilarious villian.

Special mention has to be made of the excellent cast - Paul Giamatti voices 'Screw-On Head' using almost the same accent as he would go on to use in 'John Adams'. David Hyde Pierce as 'Emperor Zombie' sounds like he's having a ball.

That this show wasn't picked up by Sci-Fi is criminal.moreless
  • Stayed true to the comic.

The Pilot episode for the Amazing Screw-On Head was a pleasure to watch. It stayed true to it's comic roots, not only in a story/writing sense but in an artistic sense as well. The visuals were outstanding thanks to Mike Mignola's artwork and seemed to be lifted right off the pages of the comic.

The cast was excellent. David Hyde Pierce's delivery as King Zombie made him one of the funniest villians in animation history. Paul Giamatti brought a forceful and heroic tone to the lead character.

Hopefully they will continue the series and be able to keep up the good work that they have started out with.

Definately a must see for any Mignola fan.moreless
  • Beautiful, leaves me wanting more.

This is one of the most beautiful cartoon's I've seen. It seem to have a good plot as well. It has a good mix of comedy and storyline. Although the first episode didn't develope the setting and charactors much, it laid down a good base, that if followed will make for a great show. The art is very comic like and the entire show could be used as a desktop wallpaper. My one complaint is that in some of the close up the quality drops and it begins to look sort of like it was done in flash. However overall I really enjoyed it.moreless
  • An excellent start to what will hopefully become a full series.

A fantastic pilot if there ever was one. The show’s stunning art style, combined with riotous humor guarantees that The Amazing Screw-On Head will develop a cult following. Just about the only character that didn’t have me laughing my ass off was the Screw-On Head himself, but he still had a certain humorous charm. The voice cast performed each character wonderfully. The only minor complaint I have is that the episode was a little too self-contained, though that’s to be expected since it IS a pilot, after all. Not that I wouldn’t mind at all if the series was very episodic, each episode wrapping up neatly. All in all, I was very impressed, and I hope to see more in the future, moreless
