In this episode Andy states that Barney's middle name is Oliver. In later episodes, Barney refers to himself as Barney "P." Fife - and in the Class Reunion episode, the Mayberry Union High yearbook lists Barney's name as Bernard Milton Fife.
(Barney wants to administer a sobriety test to Otis before releasing him)
Andy: Well, Barney, I believe a sobriety test is given to a prisoner when you first bring him in. Now you ought to have done that to Otis last night.
Barney: Aw-w, Andy, you know we couldn't a given a sobriety test to Otis last night.
Andy: Well, why not?
Barney: He was too drunk!
Barney: You was brought in here on a charge of drunkenness. Now it's my job to see if you're fit to take your place in society again.
Otis: It was last night I had a snoot full, I'm alright this mornin'.
Barney: We'll determine that in just a minute. Now I'm gonna test your reactions and your reflexes.
Otis: This jail's gettin' to be as bad as home.
Andy: We better try to sober up Mayberry's most distinguished citizen and get him outta here before those two ladies come back.
Otis: Shucks, a man can't take credit just for bein' born.
In a touching scene, Otis confides to Andy that he's given his wife some awful times. This wouldn't be the last episode in which his alcoholism would be addressed - but it was typically played for laughs. Eventually, Otis would reward his wife's patience and sober up. In the TV Movie, Return to Mayberry, he tells Andy that he's been sober for ten years. Interestingly, Hal Smith, the actor who played Otis, had never had a drink in his life.
