This is a classic Andy Griffith Show, where we once again see just exactly why Sheriff Andy Taylor is the amazing sheriff he is! What's most interesting about this episode is that Andy actually is a little testy and out of sorts (something we rarely get to see!) and truly needs a vacation. Barney insists that he take the vacation he should have taken in June, and Andy reluctantly but gratefully accepts. This puts BARNEY in charge with Gomer as his deputy--this two get into such trouble it is hard to actually know which part is the funniest--when they let the maximum security prisoner take the keys and slip out of the courthouse, when they mistakenly set him free after Andy (while camping) spots him and ties him up, or when Gomer "catches" Barney. A true winner!!moreless

    • Allan Melvin, who plays the escaped convict, appeared as an Army recruiter earlier the same season in the epsiode "Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army".

  • QUOTES (3)

    • ANDY: You been telling Gomer about that old German again?
BARNEY: Now look Andy Hugo Hoffleish may have been on the wrong side back in '18.

    • (Andy decides to go to the mountains)
Andy: Now don't tell anybody where I've gone.
Aunt Bee: Silence is my game – Mum's my name – Tick a lock!

    • (The sergeant tells Barney that they need to keep the escaped convict in the Mayberry jail cell overnight)
Barney: Well you just bring him in. We'll give him maximum security.
      Gomer: What's maximum security?
Barney: That's keys in the drawer.

    • This is the last time that we see Andy act as Justice of the Peace. Although it's never stated outright, it's conveyed in later seasons that Andy is only the Sheriff.
