  • Aunt Bee's Imaginary Boyfriend

    8.5
A bittersweet little story about someone feeling like a third wheel--in this case, it's Aunt Bee. She makes up a boyfriend to allow Andy and Helen to spend more time together without her, and just tells Andy that she's dating the butter and egg man. Barney gets a little suspicious and he digs around and discovers that the butter and egg man is married. This upsets Andy to no end, and the scene in which Barney tells Andy about Aunt Bee's "married beau" is a classic. There is a certain awkwardness in the scene where Andy confronts the poor unsuspecting fellow; the ramifications to this man's reputation seems too serious for the humor of the show. That's the only sour note in this episode. Barney is in rare form and gives the episode it comedic edge. Aunt Bee is strangely withdrown in this episode--where's the feisty and positive woman we've grown to love. I have a sneaking suscipion that Frances Bavier wasn't happy with this script or was going through something at the time of this taping--she just doesn't seem "there" somehow. Otherwise, it's a very fine example of this series.moreless

    • (Andy tells Barney that Aunt Bee has a boyfriend)
Barney: What'd you say his name was? Hendricks?
Andy: Yeah... Hendricks. Orville Hendricks from Mount Pilot.
      Barney: Oh.
      Andy: Yeah.
Barney: Local boys weren't good enough?
      Andy: Yeah. (laughs)
      Barney: How'd she meet him?
Andy: Well, he delivers butter and eggs to the house.
      Barney: Oh.
      Andy: Yeah.
Barney: He buttered her up and she egged him on.
      Andy: (laughs) That's funny.

  • NOTES (2)

    • In this episode Clara tells Bee that she is keeping company with a man, meaning she has a boyfriend. Clara is a widow who, as far as we know, never remarried.

    • This is the second time Clara makes Bee feel like she's keeping Andy from having is own life. Earlier in the series, Aunt Bee very nearly married Mayberry's dry cleaner, Fred Goss, because of Clara.
