    • Andy (after Bailey catches his first fish): Would you look at that--- he no more than got his line in the water before he caught his self a fish.
Opie: Takes you longer than that, don't it, Pa?
Andy: It sure does. Sometimes I'll come out here and sit as much as a half a day without even a nibble.
      Bailey: Yeah?
Andy: You already got a nice 'un.
Opie: And a pretty good sized one too, huh, Pa?
Andy: You better know it. Boy, you're a better man than I am. (pause) What's the matter?
Bailey: Oh, you think you're real cute, don't you Sheriff?
      Andy: How's that?
Bailey: Well, come on, I'm wise. You think you can butter me up, make me feel real good, and I'll ask my dad to go easy on you. Well it won't work so just forget it.
Opie (after Bailey has stormed off to the other side of the deck): How do you like that, he just let him get away.
Andy: Yep. I'm afraid the fish ain't the only one that got away.

    • Bailey (after sideswiping Fletcher's car; Andy and Barney have come to talk to him): Well, if you officers will excuse me, I'm going to cut out. I just, uh, stopped to check my tires.
Andy: You, uh, you always drive around with celery in your car?
Bailey: I happen to like celery.
Andy: That's nice. Now all you have to do is sideswipe a salt truck and you'll be all set, won't you?

  • Notes

    • Bill Bixby guest stars in this episode as Ron Bailey. He would go on to play Tim O'Hara on My Favorite Martian with Ray Walston a year later.

    • This is the last time we see Andy function as Justice of the Peace until Andy's Vacation in Season Four - which is the only other time we see it. One of the angles used to promote the show was the idea of a down to earth, rural father who juggles multiple roles in a small town setting. In the pilot episode Andy was Sheriff, Justice of the Peace, and editor of the town newspaper. The editor role was dropped for the regular series without explanation and the Justice of the Peace role was quietly shelved after this episode - although the sign remained on the Courthouse door. Perhaps, like all the babies he apparently delivered off-screen, we simply aren't shown this aspect of his official capacity.
