  • After successfully foiling the supermarket robberies in Raleigh, Barney returns to Mayberry for a visit at the same time an old girlfriend who is now a movie star comes to town.moreless

    9.5
The energy in this show is undeniable when Don Knotts is added to the mix. Griffith and Knotts have great chemistry together and these occasional episodes where Barney returns show us all how badly the show missed him.

A great moment comes when Barney gets off the train thinking the crowd is for him and not for the visiting movie star. Having Teena mistake Andy for her old boyfriend Barney is also a classic moment, as is Barneys attempted seduction of Teena. The scene where Barney learns she is not going to meet him for lunch is directed extremely well as the camera pushes in for a close up of Knotts face. All in all this is one of the best of the "Barney Returns" shows.

While visiting with Aunt Bea and Opie, Aunt Bea tells Barney "I wish you could come visit more often."

  • Barney's back!

    9.0
This is a very, very entertaining episode! The character of Barney Fife is best when he is in Mayberry and we, and the rest of the town, get to see Barney in all his glory. The "seduction" scene with Barney and the starlet is classic and very, very funny. The twist at the end which helps Barney become a highly desirable man to the ladies back in Raleigh is very heartwarming for Barney fans. The ending of the show with Aunt Bee and Andy starting how much they miss Barney is perfect because it conveys the audience's missing of him too. A beautiful moment in a wonderful episode!moreless

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Barney took the train in to town. The black convertible Barney drives Teena, Andy and Helen to the premiere in is Aunt Bee's car. In an earlier episode we saw Bee buy it from Goober. Apparently Bea and Opie walked to the premiere!

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Barney: I'd like to make a reservation. Table for two about quarter past one ... yeah ... B. Fife ... that's right. OH and listen -- put a bottle of your best red wine on ice for me will you? Room temperature? Oh, well, that's a matter of taste.

    • Aunt Bee: I miss Barney.
Andy: I do too. I guess there's just one Barney Fife.

  • NOTES (2)

    • The first scene of this episode is often edited from reruns. In this scene Andy is still in Raleigh from the previous episode and suggests that Barney use the vacation time he was awarded for foiling the supermarket case to come to Mayberry. Barney agrees and this sets up Barney's visit.

    • Don Knotts won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Comedy for this episode in 1967.
