  • Barney for Sheriff?

    9.5
One of my all time favorite episodes in the entire series. It combines not only humor but also a certain amount of seriousness. We begin to see Andy searching for more than life in Mayberry--and although this time it falls through, we are given a glimpse into his own inner psyche. This episode blends the drama and comedy superbly and is extraordinarily well written. Watching Barney try to "win" the election by slandering Andy, and then seeing Andy be his humble and kind self brought a few tears to my eyes. A very special episode indeed!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Earlier in the season, when Andy considered taking a job in Raleigh, he suggests that the city council will choose his replacement. In this episode however, Barney has to run for the job and win the election. This makes entirely more sense since the position of county sheriff is always an elected position and it's unlikely that a city council would have any authority over a county sheriff.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Barney: Do you know what your sheriff has in the trunk of his car? A shovel and a rake!
Goober: Ain't you got a jack?

    • (Andy's considering a new job that might involve a move to South America)
      Aunt Bee: Oh, my.
      Andy: Yeah.
Aunt Bee: That's another thing I'm worried about if we should end up in South America: the food. They eat very strange things down there.
Opie: What do they eat, Pa?
Andy: Same things as we do: beans, meat, tomatoes. They have special dishes... uh, they got a thing called a "tortilla".
Opie: You mean they eat those great big spiders?
      Andy: No, that's tarantula. Tortilla.
      Opie: Oh.

  • NOTES (1)

    • The basic plot line of this episode will be revisted over 20 years later in the TV movie Return to Mayberry. The speech in which Barney throws his support behind Andy is very similar in both shows.
