The Andy Griffith Show

Season 5 Episode 6

Barney's Bloodhound

Aired Monday 9:30 PM Oct 26, 1964 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • In the opening scene Andy and Barney kick back to listen to Leonard Blush on the radio.  Leonard Blush, the masked singer, was first mentioned in the episode "The Song Festers."  Elanor Poultice, Barney's voice teacher, tells Barney that Leonard was her most successful student.  When Barney mentions this to Andy, Andy says that he's never heard of Leonard Blush.  By this episode, Andy has apparently grown to be a fan.

    • The radio announcer heard at the beginning of this episode is voiced by Howard Morris who directed a number of episodes and is best known for playing the character of Ernest T. Bass.

    • This is the only episode where Barney uses a dog to track a criminal.

  • Quotes

    • (Barney's bloodhound Blue, comes over to Floyd; Floyd takes a lollipop from his pocket)
Andy: Has that dog been in here before, Floyd?
Floyd: Oh, yes. Barney had him in here a little while ago and I gave him a lollipop. Oh, he's a smart dog. He knew where to get another one.
Barney: (annoyed) It was NOT the lollipop he was after. He was after the man's scent – that's all – just the scent.
Floyd: Oh, no, no, no. I think it was the candy. I smell of witch hazel and shaving cream. That wouldn't interest him. No, no, no, it was definitely the candy.
Andy: Good. Good dog. He'll probably lead us right to the criminal. Provided he's travelin' around with a pocketful of lollipops.
