  • A Lemon for Barney

This has got to be among my very favorite episodes. Everything from the very beginning of this episode is sheer delight. Barney walking in and dropping his 300.00 dollars on the desk and declaring his intention to buy a car, having the widow sell him the car, having all six people in Barney's new car as the steering wheel rises up to meet him (!) and watching Thelma Lou steer as Gomer, Opie, Aunt Bee and Andy push (Barney is too much in shock to do anything!)and finally discovering that this was a scam is hysterical. The scene with Andy and Barney in the back of the car as it is being towed away inadvertedly by the scam artists is priceless. As is Barney trying to put the bullet in his gun (the wrong way). Even the ending, when a real widow tries to sell him her car and her preacher son arrives, with Barney blasting them both as scammers is priceless. Ellen Corby is magnificient in this role and Don Knotts reaches the pinnacle of his character in this episode. He will will reach these heights again during his run, but this is the first time we see the full extent of his amazing comedic talent. A true gem!
