The Andy Griffith Show

Season 1 Episode 22

Cyrano Andy

Aired Monday 9:30 PM Mar 06, 1961 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • The episode title, Cyrano Andy, is a partial pun on the 1950 Academy Award-winning José Ferrer film - Cyrano de Bergerac (which was itself based on the 1897 Edmond Rostand play). It is only partial, however, because Andy was certainly not in love with Thelma Lou, nor she with him. So, seeing as how he was actually the shy one, perhaps the title should've been Cyrano Barney - but then again, the Deputy is certainly neither a master swordsman nor a deadly pistolero.

  • Quotes

    • (Andy sends Opie away and asks Barney about his date
Andy: Now, now tell - now tell me - did, did ya get a little kissy?
Barney: Well, (clears throat) no, I didn't.
      Andy: You didn't!
      Barney: No, I didn't.
      Andy: Didn't! Well, why not?
Barney: Well, I don't know, Andy. I … well, I can't help it. I … When I'm alone with her I - I just freeze up. I don't know what to say or what to do.
Andy: Well, haven't you seen enough Rock Hudson movies to know how to sweet-talk a girl? You better tell that girl how you feel about her, if you don't you're gonna lose her. Girls like to hear things like that.

  • Notes

    • This episode marks the first appearance of Betty Lynn as Barney's long-time girlfriend, Thelma Lou. Although the two occasionally talked about marriage, their relationship would end abruptly after the fifth season when Barney moved to Raleigh to pursue his career and Thelma Lou moved away as well, to marry another man (we see her husband in the Season Six episode The Return of Barney Fife). All was not lost, however - 20 years later, in the TV Movie Return to Mayberry, a still single Barney and a now-divorced Thelma Lou would find each other again and these two seemingly star-crossed lovers would be married by Andy.
