Otis: I could never get a breakfast like this at home.
Andy: Sure you could. If you get up in the morning, go up to your wife, give her a great big kiss.
Otis: Please Andy, not while I'm eating!
Barney: I'll say it to your face Otis! You gotta pickled liver!
Otis: It's better than having a pickled puss!
Barney: Boy giraffes are selfish.
(After the dogs are brought back into the courthouse)
Andy: You You did a good thing, Barney. You did a cardinal act of mercy.
Barney: Well... like they say, "The quality of mercy is not strained, it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven." (Andy looks at him, surprised) You're not talkin' to a jerk, you know.
Andy: I know.
The hangover remedy that Andy fixes Otis consists of orange juice, chili sauce, worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, and a raw egg. According to Andy Griffith, Hal Smith actually drank the concoction and his reaction was probably genuine!
In this episode you hear Barney ask the inspector for a Sam Browne Belt. Sam Browne belts are a combination of a pistol belt or garrison belt and a shoulder strap. The Sam Browne belt was named after General Sir Sam Browne VC, GCB, KCSI, (1849-98) of the British Army in India. The strap was intended to help carry the weight of a heavy pistol or sword. Warren Furgeson sported a Sam Browne Belt as part of his regular uniform but Barney never did.
Barney: The quality of mercy is not strained, it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven.
Barney is quoting from the play, The Merchant Of Venice (Act IV, Scene 1) by William Shakespeare.
