How did this episode ever get made? The story is wildly out of character as Andy gets swept into the dream of getting rich quick. After warning everyone that this could be a con, he decides he wants to get in on the deal and gives the guy (Ensign Kelso from "Star Trek") $100 of his own money!

Andy doesn't ask for a reciept. He doesn't ask to see the map. He doesn't call other local sheriff's offices to check up on the guy. He doesn't check to see if the man has actually rented the equipment. He does not keep an eye on the train station to see if the guy is going to lam. He doesn't act like Andy at all. So this episode does not work at all.

A better twist might have been that they actually DO find some sort of treasure much to the con man's surprise--or Andy tricks him into refunding everybody's money. THAT would have been in character.moreless

A good episode, with lots of interaction between the main characters of Mayberry. It's very well written and directed, and particularly interesting to see Andy get "had" as well--it isn't everyday that Andy gets taken--so it's a special event to see! The only thing wrong with this episode is that Barney wasn't in on the deal--THAT would have made this episode a classic!
