I'm not a big fan of the first season (the fifth is my favorite), but what is probably my favorite episode is from the first season: "Opie's Charity". It is one of the funniest and sweetest without being too sappy.

"The Case of the Puch in the Nose"

Barney investigates a 20 year assult case that was never solved. Barney almost gets the whole town in a full scale war with Andy in the middle. It is hilarious.

It's hard to pick a single favorite episode of The Andy Griffith Show. I think "Opie The Birdman" is my favorite, but "A Deal Is A Deal", "The Loaded Goat", "Mr. McBeevee", and so many others would have to make my list.

Three Wishes for Opie was hilarious as well. That was what, the 5th time Barney told the town that Andy and Helen were getting married?

"The Manhunt" and "The Darling Baby" are my favs - one where Andy and Barney are the rubes, and one where they are the most worldly.

It seems impossible to give ONE FAVORITE episode since so many evoke such wonderful experiences, but I think one of my favorites is when Opie develops a crush on Helen and buys her some hose as a gift, and Andy, upon his immense and embarrassing surprise at Opie's affection for HIS girlfriend, has to constructively sidetrack Opie's affections for Helen back to his own girl friend who is his own age. That is a wonderful episode.

I can't tell you what episode or year this one was, but I loved the one in which Andy took a girl out skeet-shooting, and she (unknown to him) turned out to be state (or maybe national) champion, and she had to show him up because he kinda deserved it. But Andy, who was nothing if not a class-act and a real mensch, ate his humble pie and became a better man for it.
It was great to grow up when TV could teach you how to be a better person without LECTURING.

My favorite episode is number 56, The County Nurse. I am intrigued by the song Andy starts to sing at the end "dig my grave with a silver spade, dig it wide and deep. I have spent hours looking for the song name and/or the lyrics, and cant find it anywhere. Anyone have any knowledge of this song.
